I love the Monty Python films and those who are familiar with the hilarious ‘A Life of Brian’ will know that one of their greatest comedy songs was entitled ‘Always look on the bright side of life’. This song is really funny and every-time I hear it, it just makes me laugh & smile and sing-a-long to and is a completely uplifting song. It is a perfect song for a horrible day and when our senior team travelled to play Scotstown last Saturday 24th August in the Drumlin Credit Union senior football league it was sadly a very cruel day! Unfortunately, the match was a very one-sided encounter and just to clarify you’re not seeing things the score-line is not a misprint. If this game had been a boxing match, the white towel would have been thrown in after the first thirty minutes but the embarrassment continued as Scotstown never let up and as a result we suffered one of the heaviest defeats ever. On paper this was always going to be a tough task, even with a full team, but when your panel is plagued with injuries to first choice players including Keith Daly, Johnny Reilly, Garry Calvert, Fergal McGeough, Stephen McGuirk the task became even bigger. As the score-line reflects, this was a complete mismatch from the outset as Scotstown dominated all positions of play and were in total control from the start and lead by 1-9 to 0-1 at half time. The second half was a similar trend and a rampant and merciless Scotstown stormed to an incredible twenty-eight point victory with an enormous 5-18 to 0-5 winning margin. Now let’s all be realistic, we all knew before the year started that it was going to be a hard and testing year playing against the best players & teams in the top flight of Monaghan football. The fact is, in many ways we are punching well above our weight but it is my hope that the team management and players will regroup, review and refocus their approach for the remaining games in the league campaign. We have gained an invaluable insight of Monaghan senior football and I believe the important thing now is to remain positive and look to the future. As true Rock Gaels we will continue and always remain tremendously proud of all the players, who wear the green & white jersey, for their effort, their commitment and their dedication and hopefully they can quickly regain their confidence and bounce back from this setback so cheer up everybody and never forget to always look on the bright side of life da-da, da-da, da-da!
Drumlin Credit Union SFL Fixtures
What better way to get those blood cells pumping than a tasty local derby against Latton. It may be a championship weekend but this Sunday 1st September the senior team will be back in action when they travel to O’Rahilly Park, to take on our neighbours Latton. The game has a throw-in time of 12.30pm so make sure you get out of your bed and go along to support the lads.
Speedy Recovery
On behalf of the club I would like to extend our best wishes and wish a speedy recovery to Dean Fay who sustained serious injuries to the ribs during our clash against Scotstown last Saturday. Get well soon Dean and we look forward to seeing you back wearing the green & white jersey as soon as possible.
Under 10 Go Games Blitz
Another very enjoyable and exciting Go Games was held last Saturday 24th August when our under 10 footballers travelled to Currin to take part in the blitz. As always it was great to see so many youngsters from various clubs across the county having fun playing our National game and it is always great to see the future stars of the club perform at this level. I suppose in a certain way it’s refreshing to see the game played in a carefree and exciting manner and this is the way football should be played. Teams competing on the day included Aghabog, Currin, Eire Og, Tyholland, Sean McDermott’s and our own wee bunch of warrior’s. All games were very entertaining and free-flowing and full credit to all the coaches and mentors for having the teams organised. All the kids played really well and gave a wonderful display, showing great enthusiasm and showed their many talents, that they have learned from their coaching sessions and well done to them. Once again, it was wonderful to see so many parents there to support and encourage the kids and we look forward to the next blitz which will be a double blitz for all under 8 and under 10 players and will take place on Saturday 7th September in Latton.
Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 12 Div 2B
The under 12 team will play Fergal O’Hanlon’s in the final of the Shield Cup on Saturday 7th September. The venue and time to be confirmed.
Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 14
As Tyholland have withdrawn from this division it now leaves only four teams remaining. There will be no semi-finals so the top two teams will play in the Cup Final while the 3rd and 4th place teams will compete in the Shield Final. Drumhowan and Aghabog finished level on points and have to play-off to decide who goes into the Cup Final to play Killeevan or the Shield Final to play Rockcorry. Possible dates for the finals are Saturday 14th or Saturday 21st September. Training for the under 14 footballers continues on Thursday 29th August at 6.30pm.

The numbers drawn on Monday 26th August were 3, 4, 7 and 16. There was no jackpot winner of €4,500.00. Hard Luck
I would like to extend our commiserations to the Monaghan minor players and management on their defeat by Mayo last Sunday at Croke Park. It was a fantastic achievement on reaching this level and winning the Ulster title along the way was a magical moment for the county and one that we shall never forget. We sincerely thank you all for your efforts during the year and moving forward, I imagine the experience gained this year will only stand to the players and management for next year’s campaign.

On behalf of everyone in the Rockcorry GAA club I would like to convey our deepest sympathies to the McCabe family, relatives and friends on the passing of Paddy McCabe, Rockcorry. May he rest in eternal peace.
