ROCKCORRY G.A.A.

CLUB NOTES

20th August 2013

Drumlin Credit Union SFL

Pardon the cliché but ‘a game of two halves’ is an old cliché in football terms and that is certainly what we got last Sunday 18th August, when our senior team travelled to play Carrickmacross in the Drumlin Credit Union senior football league. The first half of this highly entertaining match we totally controlled and played some outstanding attacking football and held a commanding 0-4 to 3-6 advantage at the interval. However, while we still enjoyed our fair share of possession during the second period we could not convert our chances and it was Carrickmacross, who came out with a different attitude and stronger will, who were getting scores on the board as they ate into our lead and managed to close the gap to a single point, 3-7 to 3-8. As the game entered the final few minutes the game could have gone either way but great credit must be given to the lads who showed tremendous character and spirit as they dug very, very deep to secure a deserved victory on a score-line Carrickmacross 3-7 Rockcorry 3-9.  Please log onto www.rockcorrygaa.ie for a full match report and a selection of action photographs.

Gormley Upvc Senior Football Championship

The draw was made for the next round of the senior championship and it has thrown up some mouth-watering encounters. Ballybay v Monaghan Harps, Clontibret v Scotstown, Doohamlet v Carrickmacross, Castleblayney v Magheracloone, and guess what? We got a bye along with Latton.

Annual Golf Classic

We held our annual golf classic last Saturday 17th August at the scenic Clones Golf Course and while the weather conditions started off damp it thankfully turned out to be a wonderful, fun packed day. The event was a huge success and despite the weak economy we had a great turnout with over a hundred golfers including many former & current players and many other golfing enthusiasts who were willing to take the time out of their busy schedule to help support the club by participating in the golf classic and I would like to sincerely thank them for joining us in our efforts to raise funds for the club and for making the event such a wonderful occasion. Once again I would like to take this opportunity to extend our thanks and appreciation to our main sponsors Aidan & Marie Murray of Mullinahinch House Private Nursing Home and all the other companies and individuals who sponsored greens & tee-boxes. Please visit www.rockcorrygaa.ie or our Facebook page to view a selection of photographs.

Golf Classic Presentations

The presentation of prizes took place in Fitzpatrick’s and the overall winning team was Thomas McCormick, Paddy Kerr, Paul Finlay and Mickey Fitzpatrick. Other prizes were hotly contested on the day and the following team won 2nd prize Donal Guckian, Pat Ryan, Bernard Gilbane & James Corrigan. 3rd prize went to Paddy McKeown, Pat Connolly, Paul Jenkins & Declan McCallion and 4th prize went to Paddy Kerr, Mickey Fitzpatrick, Benny Lennon & Colin Creighton. Nearest the pin went to Tommy Callaghan while Peter McNally collected the prize for the longest drive. We also had plenty of teams made up from non-regular golfers with the winning team going to Colin Quinn, Dwayne Rooney, Keelan Clerkin & Aaron Clerkin with Martin Carroll, Niall McKeown, Cathal Sheridan and Andrew Carroll coming in second place and congratulations to all the winners.

All Ireland Semi-Final

The All Ireland Minor Football Semi-Final between Monaghan v Mayo takes place this Sunday 25th August in Croke Park. Hopefully, at this stage you have your tickets and will be travelling once again to support and cheer on the lads. On behalf of everyone at Rockcorry GAA club I would like to extend our best wishes to Frank Brady, his backroom team and the panel of players in their efforts to claim a spot in this year’s All Ireland Final. Good luck lads; let’s hope that all the hard work and sacrifices pay off.

Congratulations

I would like to once again congratulate the Monaghan ladies team and their management for a fantastic win over Laois last Saturday. While on the 19th hole we were all glued to the television sets for the whole encounter and enjoying the match. It was a great achievement, a wonderful team performance all round and well done. Keep those Monaghan flags flying high folks!

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 12 Div 2B

Our under 12 footballers travelled to O’Neill Park to play Cremartin in the Gerry’s Prepared Veg league Division 2B Shield semi-final last Saturday 17th August and the old cliché that ‘football was the real winner’ is certainly very apt because both sets of players produced a fabulous hour’s entertainment as they served up a thrilling encounter and deserve great credit. We played with the wind advantage in the first half and the game was evenly contested with both teams displaying enormous amounts of enthusiasm and effort and at the end of a hectic twenty minutes Cremartin enjoyed a slender one point lead, leading 1-3 to 0-5. When play resumed Cremartin made a bright start and opened up a four point advantage but our heads didn’t drop and despite being down a couple of points the boys & girls battled hard and without doubt gave an inspired performance to move ahead by a single point. The final moments of the match was ‘thrill a minute’ madness as Cremartin threw the proverbial kitchen sink at us during the dying moments, and if I’m totally honest there were some heart stopping flashes, but the team were determined to hold on and they secured the victory on a score-line Cremartin 2-5 Rockcorry 1-9. Some great skills were on display during this highly enjoyable encounter and I have to report that there was fantastic support from parents who were there to encourage and cheer on all the boys and girls from the side-lines and we look forward to the same level of support in the final.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 14

Our under 14 footballers played their final league game in the Gerry’s Prepared Veg Division 4 league campaign on Tuesday 13th August when they entertained Drumhowan at Pairc Naomh Mhuire. The match was played in perfect conditions and we started the match well and scored a couple of lovely points early on but Drumhowan quickly responded and at the end of an entering first quarter they lead by 0-3 to 1-2. During the second quarter Drumhowan found another gear and completely dominated the proceedings and lead comfortably, leading 0-5 to 4-4. In fairness, our lads who have improved significantly as a team over the course of the year, came out strong in the third quarter and really put Drumhowan, who are a top team, under a lot of pressure, and actually out-scored them, to leave the score-board showing Rockcorry 2-6 Drumhowan 5-6. The final quarter was evenly balanced with good football being displayed by both sets of players but in the end Drumhowan had done enough to secure the spoils on a score-line Rockcorry 3-7 Drumhowan 5-10. They have a bye this weekend so their next outing is fixed for Saturday 7th September when they will compete in the Shield semi-finals.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 16 League

Our under 16 team were decisively beaten by Doohamlet last Thursday 15th August. Their next game is on Thursday 22nd August  when they host  Aghabog/Currin. Throw-in time 7pm.

Go Games Blitz

The under 10 footballers will be back in action this Saturday 24th August when they travel to Oram to take part in a Go Games Blitz campaign starting at 10.00am and finishing at 12 noon. Just a reminder, all parents / guardians are asked to meet up at the clubrooms to assist with transporting the children to this blitz.

Happy Engagement

On behalf of everyone at the club I would like to extend our heartiest congratulations to Ross Murray and Geraldine Quinn on their recent engagement.
