All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Quarter-Final
Monaghan v Tyrone, Saturday, 5.00, Croke Park
Monaghan will look to back up their Ulster SFC win when they take on Tyrone in the All-Ireland quarter-finals at Croke Park on Saturday.
After defeating Antrim and Cavan to reach the Ulster final, Monaghan produced their best performance for some years to defeat All-Ireland champions and win a first Ulster title since 1988. Tyrone exited the provincial championship with a quarter-final defeat against Donegal, but they have bounced back with wins over Offaly, Roscommon, Kildare and Meath.
Tyrone have held the Indian sign over Monaghan in recent years, winning the counties’ last four championship meetings, including Ulster finals in 2007 and 2010, since the ’88 Ulster decider.
Monaghan had excellent performances all over the pitch last time out and they will need the same again in this one from the likes of Kieran and Darren Hughes, Conor McManus, Owen Lennon, Colin Walshe, Drew Wylie and Dessie Mone. Tyrone’s main man at the minute is Seán Cavanagh, who had a superb game against Meath last Saturday, but they can also call on talent in every line of the pitch, from Conor Clarke to Peter Harte to Cavanagh to Mattie Donnelly to the dangerous inside forwards Stephen O’Neill and Darren McCurry.
