ROCKCORRY G.A.A.
CLUB NOTES
30th July 2013
All Ireland Senior Football Quarter Final
The All Ireland Quarter Final between Monaghan v Tyrone takes place this Saturday 3rd August at 5pm in Croke Park. On behalf of everyone from the Rockcorry GAA club I would like to extend our best wishes and good luck to the team and the team management in their attempts to progress to the next round of the competition. I would urge all our club members and fans to travel to the game, if possible, and get behind the players who did the county so proud just a couple of weeks ago at the Ulster Final. Lads you have the ability and the strength to do it, so there’s really only one more thing left to say or indeed shout, COME ON MONAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGHAN.
All Ireland Minor Football Quarter Final
The All Ireland Minor Football Quarter Final between Monaghan v Tipperary will take place on Monday 5th August at 3pm in Longford. Again, the club extends their best wishes to Frank Brady, his backroom team and the panel of players in their efforts to claim a semi-final spot. Good luck lads.
Annual Golf Classic
Our upcoming golf classic takes place on Saturday 17th August so please spread the word to all your golfing buddies. The cost to enter a team is €120.00 and to book your place please contact our chairman Jimmy McGeough 087-9457279 or Ollie McQuillan 087-2100800 and a member of the organising committee will be in contact with you to discuss a convenient time for you to play. There are also exciting opportunities for businesses, families and individuals to advertise by sponsoring a tee or a green for a reasonable €30 or €50. If you are unable to play golf but would still like to make a contribution perhaps you would be interested in sponsoring a prize for a raffle. If so please get in touch because we would be delighted to talk to you.
Platinum Tanks Reserve League Fixtures
Our reserve game against Truagh on Wednesday 24th July was sadly cancelled. The reserve team will play their last league game of the season tomorrow evening, Friday 2nd August, when they play Oram at Pairc Naomh Mhuire and the game has a throw-in time of 7.45pm
Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 12 Div 2B
The under 12 league semi-finals (cup & shield) is fixed for Saturday 17th August. There are a number of play-off matches so our opponents will not be known until they are completed.
Croke Park Activity Day
I imagine for most young players (and even some mature retired players) the opportunity to play in Croke Park is no doubt a lifetime ambition. I mean, I’m sure every player at some stage dreams of playing on the ‘hallow turf’! That dream, playing in Croke Park, came true for two of our up and coming stars namely Shane Greenan and Aaron McPhillips who were among a group of under 12 players who were selected from the county to train and play in the theatre of dreams. This was an amazing opportunity for the lads and during the morning session they took part in some coaching sessions and played a match while in the afternoon they enjoyed an exclusive behind the scenes tour of the famous stadium and the GAA museum. This was a fantastic opportunity for the youngsters and when I caught up with them on their return they both said “it was so amazing and totally unbelievable”. Well done lads.
Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 14
Our under 14 footballers travelled to play Killeevan in the Gerry’s Prepared Veg Division 4 league game last Saturday 27th July and it was a case of the home side being far too clinical and physical as we were decisively beaten by a stronger and impressive Killeevan outfit. The game was played in glorious conditions and, in truth; the writing was on the wall right from the first whistle as the Killeevan side were almost totally dominant in every position on the field. By sharp contrast, very few of our players wearing the green & white jersey played anything up to form and as a result we were outmuscled by Killeevan as they secured a comprehensive & comfortably victory. Their next game is scheduled for Tuesday 13th August when they host Drumhowan at Pairc Naomh Mhuire. Please check official fixture for throw-in time.
Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 16 League
Our under 16 footballers competed against Castleblayney in the Gerry’s Prepared Veg Division 4 league last Thursday 25th July and played out a memorable encounter. Sadly the boys in the green & gold jerseys just edged the contest by the narrowest of margins. As games go this was a highly entertaining match and was a tremendous advertisement for our games and both teams has to be commended for their efforts which saw some of the finest football of the year played. It was very evident from the start that our lads were up for the challenge as they put in a battling performance and after a remarkable first half the match was all square with the scoreboard showing Rockcorry 3-0 Castleblayney 1-6. The tit for tat nature of the game continued during the second half and saw the game flow from end to end but with both defences standing strong scores were proving hard to come by. As a result, the encounter remained electrifying with little between the sides and as we chased the game the lads came so close but unfortunately they were deprived of what would have been a deserved share of the spoils but in the end the Castleblayney outfit held out for a victory on a final score-line Rockcorry 3-4 Castleblayney 1-11. Once again, against all the odds this bunch of players displayed great character and they never gave up and fought valiantly to the end and I imagine the team management will be very proud of their charges because it was a fantastic performance full of heart and determination and they were extremely unlucky to lose this match.
The next game for the under 16 footballers is on Thursday 15th August July when they travel to play Doohamlet.
