Auto McK Senior Camogie Championship

Clontibret 4 – 13

Truagh       0 –  4

Clontibret advanced to the Championship final when they put paid to Truagh in the 3rd round of the Senior Championship which was played in Scotstown GAA Grounds on Friday evening last. Castleblayney had  also qualified for the final defeating this understrength Truagh side in the  week previous.

The scoreboard said it all when Clontibret’s Shauna Finnegan rattled the net in the first minutes of the game closely followed by a point from Nicola Morgan. Truagh’s Siobhan Mc. Kenna who was carrying a bad hand injury placed  a point over the bar in the 6th minute. Clontibret came up trumps again in the 10th minute when Truagh goalie Aine Mc.Kee got her stick to a ’45 only to be rebounded over the bar by the awaiting Marie Greenan . Nicola Morgan followed up with a point from play a minute later.

Truagh who were facing a famine for scores got their name on the scoreboard  once again when Orla Mc. Meel converted  two free ‘s in the 12th and  22nd minute.  Clontibret added a further six points three of which were from free’s  before the half time whistle, theses coming from Nicola Morgan, Michelle Morgan and Marie Greenan to bring the half time score to Clontibret 1 -9, Truagh0 -3

With Truagh facing an uphill battle at the throw in of the second half the story was some what similar when Clontibret’s  Nicola Morgan was taking her scores from all angles  and rattled the net on three occasions.  Truagh only managing a further point when Mairead Mc. Carron fired one over the bar in the dying stages.

Castleblayney and Clontibret now go head to head in the Championship Final on Sunday 25th August.

Clontibret  U14  retain  Nelly Quigley Cup  for the 3rd. successive year

This was a wonderful achievement for a team comprised of so many U-12 players – along with some more experienced stalwarts. As anticipated, it was a tough encounter, all the more for being played in temperatures of 27˚C and although a 3 goal gap separated the teams in the end, not until the final whistle sounded could normal breathing resume.       Ríoghnach Duffy, Clontibret captain, opened her sides account when she drilled the ball to the back of the net in the 6th minute. Her mid-field partner Chloe Mc Guigan tagged on a lovely point from a 45m free 2 minutes later.  However the St. Kevin’s response was swift when Oonagh Matthews scrambled the ball across the line in the 13th minute giving her side the opening goal. Clontibret continued to work hard, especially at mid-field, where they won most of the battles, and in the half back-line where Sioneen Morgan was rock solid,, and eventually this paid dividends when Abbie McArdle got her hurl to the sliotar as it was being cleared by St Kevin’s goalie, Ailish Carroll, and it finished up in the net. But just before half time, St Kevin’s narrowed the gap again when Grainne Murray tapped over a point leaving the half-time score:

Clontibret 2-1

St Kevin’s 1-1

In the second half, Jennifer Duffy became the new Kieran Hughes of Clontibret and illustrated this by drilling the ball low and hard past Ailish Carroll 2 minutes from the re-start, to increase her sides winning margin by 2 goals.  But once again St Kevin’s responded quickly with Aisling Matthews hitting the roof of the Clontibret net 4 minutes later. The game was being played at a pulsating pace at this stage, despite the searing temperatures, but when a St Kevin’s player deliberately pulled across young Duffy it looked as though Clontibret could be forced to continue without her. But Jennifer showed she was made of sterner stuff and even more sweetly, the ensuing free, taken by the dead ball expert, Chloe McGuigan, saw the St Kevin’s net minder helpless as the sliotar flew beyond her reach to the corner of the net. Clontibret knew they were now on a roll and began to push hard for home – their superior fitness a telling feature. Ironically it was Diminutive Duffy who sealed the fate of the Nelly Quigley Cup with a penetrating run from far out and a shot that rasped to the back of the net in the 39th minute. St Kevin’s made a number of positional changes in order to counteract a by now rampant Clontibret but it was too little too late and the final score read:

There were scenes of great excitement when the final whistle sounded but players dropped to the ground to gain a brief respite after their exertions in the blistering heat. However their energies were soon restored and the jubilant team headed to the Glencarn Hotel for a welcome meal and then later on, the all-important tour of Clontibret with the cup.

Many thanks to all those who have helped and supported this squad all year in so many ways. A particular word of thanks to Cathy McGuigan and Patricia Gorman who travelled with the team on Friday evening last, to Marie who is ever-available to help out if required, to Michael Duffy and Aisling who were called on to umpire at the final, to Patricia Duffy and a small, but loyal, band of parents who provide transport and make themselves available to help out constantly. It is much appreciated.
