Tyholland came out on the right side of an entertaining IFC preliminary-round match against Corduff in Inniskeen on Sunday. Last year’s runners-up were pushed all the way by Corduff, but it was their greater spread of scorers that saw them through, with eight players contributing a total of 0-13 from play, as Corduff were over-reliant on frees, with just three of their points coming from play. Tyholland had good performances from Dermot Coyle, Karl O’Connell, Peadar Farrelly, Paul McCormack and Ronan McNally, while they were also boosted by Gary McQuaid returning from injury to complete the game, despite the former county man shipping a few knocks during the hour. Keith McEnaney, Ben Woods and Shane Malone led Corduff’s challenge.

Tyholland got off to a flying start, as Shane Treanor set them off on a run of five unanswered points, followed quickly by a Dermot Coyle point after he had been picked out by a Peadar Farrelly free. Coyle quickly added his second point after a cross-field ball from Paul McCormack and Treanor also hit another, following good work by Gary McQuaid, before Karl O’Connell raced through the Corduff defence to fire over. Keith McEnaney won and scored a 30-metre free to get Corduff off the mark in the ninth minute and a brace of ‘45s from Jason Hand closed the gap to two, but Niall Askin punched a McCormack cross over for Tyholland, before Ryan McKenna restored the four-point gap.

Corduff got their first score from play on 18 minutes through a fine effort from Martin Mills, after good approach play by Shane Malone and Pádraic Keenan, but Farrelly linked up with Gary McQuaid to open his account, before Raymond Ronaghan punched a McKenna ’45 over the bar. Keith McEnaney took a pass from Malone to kick a fine point, but O’Connell released Askin for a point which gave Tyholland a double-scores lead at half-time: 0-10 to 0-5.

Keith McEnaney kicked the first three points of the second half – a brace of 30-metre frees after fouls on Keenan and a goal-attempt which was tipped over the bar by Tyholland keeper Pauric Hamill, after he had been put through by Ciarán Brennan – while another goal chance went untaken when Mills over-hit a pass for Keenan. McCormack got on the end of a pass from Farrelly to curl over a stylish score with the outside of his boot and although McEnaney replied from a 40-metre free after a foul on Malone, Farrelly kicked a good point from play.

Tyholland struck the only goal of the game at the end of the third quarter when a foul on Farrelly allowed Dermot Coyle to coolly convert a penalty and even though Mills responded from a close-range free after a foul on John McEnaney, Farrelly combined with Treanor to kick his third point. A 20-metre free by Mills, after a foul on Keenan, and a third ’45 by Hand gave Corduff hope and Keith McEnaney then tapped over a 13-metre free for a foul on Brennan, but Tyholland held on to advance to a first-round match against Donaghmoyne.
