Armagh 4 -10
Monaghan 4 -9
Monaghan County Camogie Team lost out to Armagh by the narrowest of margins in a thrilling affair played in O’Neill Park, Clontibret on Monday evening last. Monday’s qualifier determined who would meet Cavan in the final of the Ulster Junior Championship which is fixed for Saturday 15th June. Cavan had already qualified defeating Monaghan and Armagh en route.
Armagh’s Sinead Kiernan opened the scoring with a point from throw in but the home siders got off to a flying start when they went 2 -3 without reply in the space of 5 minutes with 3 points coming from Marie Greenan, and with Shauna Finnegan and Mairead Mc. Carron contributing goals apiece. Armagh responded with a goal as a result of a skirmish in the Monaghan goalmouth before Nicola Morgan delivered a fine pass to Marie Greenan who duly placed it over the bar in the 14th minute, Greenan again converted a free just a few seconds later.
Ciaran who was now firing on all cylinders converted a free for the Armagh side at the end of the first quarter, Greenan raised the green flag for Monaghan when her converted free dropped into the net after being taken down in a yellow card offence four minutes later . With nothing between these two teams Armagh’s Aoife Crilly claimed a goal from a sideline cut and Monaghan’s Shauna Finnegan completed the halftime scoring with a point, leaving Armagh trailing by an 8 point deficit.
Armagh were on track once again when they added a further point in the first minute of the second half but Monaghan didn’t let their guard down when Finnegan delivered to Greenan who landed it in the net and they reversed the situation a minute later when Finnegan got one over the bar.
Ailbhe Boyle replaced Shauna Finnegan due to a hand injury and Armagh raised the bar when they went 2 – 4 up with out reply. Twenty minutes lapsed before Monaghan contributed when Brid Treanor delivered to Greenan for a point, Greenan converted a free five minutes later which was to be Monaghan’s last score of the game and Armagh ran out eventual winners with a further 3 points two of which were from Kieran and one from Alanna Loughran.
