Round-up (May 1)

By cshalvey Wed 1st May

It was a busy night on Wednesday, with all 15 matches going ahead in the Senior, Intermediate and Junior Football Leagues.

Credit-Union-Websize

Scotstown remain top of the Drumlin Group of Credit Unions Senior Football League after they battled their way to their fifth straight win away to Magheracloone. After an even start which saw the teams share the opening six points, Scotstown pulled away to lead by 1-6 to 0-3 at half-time; Kieran Hughes the goal-scorer. Magheracloone closed the gap to three points in the second half, but two pointed frees from Rory Beggan helped Scotstown close the game out. Magheracloone’s defeat allowed Monaghan Harps to move into a share of second place after the county-town team won away to county champions Ballybay. Six players scored in the first half for the Harps, who led by 0-9 to 0-6, but second-half scores from Paul Finlay and Dessie Ward brought Ballybay to within one inside the final quarter, until the Harps finished strongly with Liam Hahessy scoring the only goal and Donal Hahessy taking his tally to 0-5. Castleblayney made it two wins in a row, although they needed to produce a big finish, including a goal from Martin McElroy, to see off a dogged Rockcorry. Latton got their first points with a 0-15 to 0-10 win in Clontibret. Despite falling two points down early on, Latton dominated the first half on their way to a 0-9 to 0-4 lead and they remained comfortable throughout the second half. Doohamlet also got off the mark to leave hosts Carrickmacross bottom of the table. Doohamlet led by 3-6 to 2-5 at the end of a first half which produced five goals and although Carrick also netted twice in the second period, last year’s IFC winners held on to win by 3-12 to 4-7.

Monaghan Electrical

Truagh continue to set the pace in the Monaghan Electrical Intermediate Football League after goals from Mark Counihan and Christopher McKenna set them on their way to a fourth straight win, at home to Tyholland. Donaghmoyne are also on eight points after they found the net four times on their way to a nine-point win away to Currin, while Corduff are a point further back after they recovered from conceding a goal at the start of the second half to Darren Bishop to draw with Cremartin. Inniskeen got their second win in a row with four points to spare over Drumhowan, as did Clones, who held on to beat Aughnamullen in a game where they got off to a great start, with David Freeman converting a penalty.

Eurotech

There is a four-way tie at the top of the Eurotech Junior Football League after the latest round. For the second game in a row, the old adage that ‘goals win games’ proved true for Killanny as they netted three times in a narrow win over Oram, while a goal from a penalty by Seán McMeel helped Emyvale return to winning ways at the expense of Éire Óg. Seán McDermotts are also on six points after they drew with Toome, while Aghabog missed the chance to move clear at the top, as they fell to a heavy defeat against Blackhill. Meanwhile, Scotstown got their first point of the JFL with a draw in Killeevan.
