Saturday was a day to remember for Monaghan football, with the senior and minor footballers both winning league titles (see match reports). There was no luck, however, for the minor hurlers, who lost to Donegal in the Ulster shield final on Friday, or the ladies footballers, who fell to a surprise defeat against Mayo on Sunday. Monaghan had won all seven games in the NFL Division One up to the semi-finals, but their bid to retain the title ended against a Cora Staunton-inspired Mayo side. Even bringing Amanda Casey and Cathriona McConnell wasn’t enough for Monaghan, as Staunton accounted for Mayo’s entire total of 1-10.
