ROCKCORRY G.A.A.

CLUB NOTES

28th May 2013

Drumlin Credit Unions SFL

Our senior team travelled to play the mighty Clontibret in the Drumlin Credit Union senior football league on Wednesday 22nd May. The game was played on a lovely sunny evening for football and we togged out without the services of some key players, namely team captain Keith Daly, Mark Daly, Damien Matthews, Jamie Smith and Garry Calvert through injury but the general consensus from our supporters leaving O’Neill Park was that “it was better than we had expected, but not as good as we had hoped” because after a courageous effort from the lads a better-balanced Clontibret side secured the victory with a five point winning margin on a score-line Clontibret 0-18 to Rockcorry 3-4. In fairness, you could not fault the effort or endeavour from the players as they left everything on the pitch and it was a massive improvement from the last time out when effectively the game was lost during the first five minutes after conceding early goals. It was a brave effort that just fell short, they really worked hard and hats off to all the players. Clontibret had that bit more experience, strength in depth and were more clinical in front of the goals but the team management and players can take a lot of heart from this game and with no competitive games for a while it will give all the players with niggling injuries a chance to recover and get prepared for the upcoming championship encounter against Ballybay.

Gormley uPVC Senior Football Championship

Spread the word and keep Friday 14th June free, if possible, because our preliminary round encounter against the reigning county champions, Ballybay, has been fixed for that date and will take place in Aughnamullen with a throw-in time of 8.00pm.

Our reserve players will be back in action tomorrow evening, Friday 31st May, when they take on Sean McDermott’s in the reserve championship (Crawley Cup). The game will take place in Pairc Naomh Mhuire and has a throw-in time of 7.30pm. (extra time if necessary).

Closed Season

Any player planning a quick getaway of having a holiday please note the closed season starts on Wednesday 26th June to Monday 8th July inclusive.

Go Games Blitz – Under 8’s

Last Saturday 25th May, our under 8 footballers travelled to Drumhowan to take part in their second Go Games Blitz and it was great to see so many youngsters from various club across the county having fun playing their games and developing their football skills.

They played games against Drumhowan, Castleblayney, Oram  and Inniskeen and played really well and gave a wonderful display, showing great enthusiasm and showing their many talents, that they have learned from their coaching sessions. It was really fantastic to watch all the young players engage in the game and they all had a lot of fun which is the main focus of the Go Games.

It was wonderful to see so many parents there to support and encourage the kids on the day and for volunteering to help out. There was a great community atmosphere around the pitch and good camaraderie between all the clubs and it made for a great blitz and most importantly a great opportunity for so many of our future stars. Well done everyone and we look forward to the next blitz with huge excitement and anticipation.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 12

The under 12 team played their first competitive game of the Winter league, apologies the Summer league, when they entertained Tyholland at Pairc Naomh Mhuire on Monday 27th May. Performances have been improving with every game and while there are still some things to work on they all gave a good account of themselves against a well-drilled and organised Tyholland side. The first half was played in wet and slippery conditions and we conceded some early scores and after a very enjoyable first twenty minutes Tyholland enjoyed a four point advantage, leading 1-2 to 2-3. Thankfully, the sun decided to grace us for the second period and while we created plenty of chances, unfortunately too many shots landed short or we kicked too many wide. However, we may have struggled to get scores on the board but all players did not bow against wave upon wave of attacks from Tyholland and they all gave their best but Tyholland were just more economical in front of the goals and secured the win on a final score-line Rockcorry 1-4 Tyholland 2-10.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 14

The next for the under 14 footballers is this Saturday 1st June when they travel to play Drumhowan at 12 noon.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 16

Our under 16 footballers were comprehensively beaten last Thursday 23rd May, when they played a stronger Doohamlet outfit at Pairc Naomh Mhuire. While we gave a good account of ourselves in the first half and were there or thereabouts the flood gates opened in the second period with Doohamlet dominating possession and in the end they secured a comfortable victory. Hard luck lads, keep those heads held high, we are very proud of you all and never stop trying and your day will come. Their next match is on Thursday 30th May, when they travel to play an Aghabog / Currin amalgamation. The game has a throw-in time of 7.30pm. All players are requested to meet at the dressing-rooms at 6.20pm.

On behalf of everyone from the Rockcorry GAA club I would like to congratulate the Monaghan Minor team management and the entire panel of players for a wonderful performance and a great win against Antrim last Sunday evening in Newry. Well done lads, keep up the good work.

Monaghan ‘Investec’ Jersey

The much touted and anticipated new design of the Monaghan county jersey was officially unveiled last Thursday evening in the Hillgrove Hotel and I have to say the jersey design that is sponsored by Investec is very impressive because what I know about the world of fashion is pretty much based on the classic film, Zoolander!!! But seriously though I showed my nephews a photograph and their response was “that’s cool, can I have one”, which is a big thumbs up. On behalf of everyone from the Rockcorry GAA club I would just like to wish every player, including men, ladies, minors, hurlers etc that dons the new county jersey the very best of luck in all the competitions this year. Roll on the Ulster Championship!
