CLUB NOTES

14th May 2013

Drumlin Credit Unions SFL

Sadly, due to the unpleasant weather conditions our game against Carrickmacross last Sunday, in the Drumlin Credit Union SFL was cancelled due to the pitch being unplayable. It was obviously disappointing but the safety of the players must remain the highest priority and the game will now be re-scheduled at a later date. The next outing for our senior team in the Drumlin Credit Union league campaign will be this Sunday 19th May when we host the county champions Ballybay. Throw-in time 2.00pm.

Drumlin Credit Union SFL Fixtures

On Wednesday 22nd May the senior team travel to play Clontibret and the game has a throw-in time of 8.00pm.

Platinum Tanks Reserve Football League Div 2B

The reserve team travelled to St. Mary’s Park, last Friday 10th May, to take on Castleblayney in the Platinum Tanks Reserve Football League Division 2B and they continued their recent good form, following the championship victory over Oram, to record a rare, but very deserved, win in the league competition on a final score-line Castleblayney 1-11 Rockcorry 2-12. Speaking to our team manager, Gerard O’Brien, after the game he stated “it was a good performance from the lads and we can take a lot of positives from the match. You couldn’t fault the effort or endeavour from any of the lads this evening, they give it their all to secure the spoils.” Highlighting the displays of some of the fringe players he added “Andrew Carroll and the Bomber (aka Aaron Clerkin) upfront were outstanding while Cathal Sheridan, Ciaran O’Hart & Corey Smith played a blinder in defence.” Looking ahead Gerard was hopeful that the players would continue to put in a big effort preparing for the second round of the league campaign.

Club Fundraising Events

The chairman of our finance sub-committee, Ollie McQuillan, has informed me of a couple of upcoming fund raising events so please take note and mark it down on your calendar or set a reminder in your smart phone. Following the phenomenal success and support of last year’s golf classic it was only a formality that we would run another one this year, and it is going ahead on Saturday 17th August in the Clones Golf club. Our second event will take place during October, and it will be Ye-Ha time to dust down your hat and shine those boots because it’s our fabulous honky-tonk “Rock-Country” night. This was a very enjoyable night and people who took part and attended last year’s show are still talking and praising the star-like quality show. It will take in St. Mary’s Hall on Friday 11th October. Both of these events are about raising money for the club to cover current day-to-day expenses but also to raise funds for future development. It is all about participation and we would love you to join us and we look forward to your continued support for these events.

Go Games Blitz – Under 10

This Saturday 18th May we host an under 10 Go Games Blitz during 10 – 12 noon. All players are requested to arrive at 9.30am. Under 10 coaching continues tonight, Thursday 16th May, at 6.30pm.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 12

Our under 12 footballers travelled to Cloghan, Annyalla to play Cremartin in the Gerry’s Prepared Veg Spring League Final on Saturday 11th May. Weather conditions were horrible and one would be forgiven for thinking it was the middle of winter because it was bitterly cold, wet and windy and we even had the odd hailstone shower but that did not stop the players, from both clubs, providing a high standard of football and a very entertaining match. Despite missing many regular players, due to First Holy Communion in the Parish, all the boys and girls put in a very good performance, especially during the first half, when they played against a very strong breeze and at the interval we trailed by 1-1 to 2-5. When play resumed they produced some great attacking football that was a delight to watch and they managed to reduce the deficit back to just a single point. However, Cremartin had the ability to respond and just kept their noses in front with some fine points from play. With the final whistle approaching we applied a lot of pressure in search of that equalising score but sadly time ran out and Cremartin secured the victory by a single score, Cremarin 4-6 Rockcorry 3-6. Congratulations to the Cremartin club on their win and I would just like to thank all the parents and supporters who travelled to Cloghan to cheer on and support our future footballers. Many thanks to John Elliot and Colm Donnelly for looking after the team and hopefully we will have other days later on in the year. The first game in the under 12 summer league will take place on Saturday 25th May. Keep up the good work boys and girls.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 14

The under 14 footballers are back in action this Saturday 18th May when they play Killeevan at Pairc Naomh Mhuire at 12 noon.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 16

Unfortunately, Fergal O’Hanlon’s were not able to field a team last Thursday so the next match for the under 16 footballers  is tonight, Thursday 16th May, when they travel to play Castleblayney  and the game has a throw-in time of 7.00pm. All players are requested to meet at the dressing-rooms at 6.20pm.

Rockcorry Bowls Club

Following a recent tournament the local Bowls Club made a presentation the Alzheimer’s Society. Pat Brannigan (Chairman of the Rockcorry Bowls Club) presented a cheque to Mai Murphy (Chairperson of the Co. Monaghan Branch of the Alzheimer’s Society) I would like to acknowledge and applaud the members of the Rockcorry Bowls Club for raising money for such a good charity. It is an amazing effort from such a dedicated group of people and once again well done and keep up the good work.

Rockcorry Badminton Club

We are a small community and I believe it’s important that we acknowledge the efforts of other sporting codes who are trying hard to build a brighter future for their members. The local badminton club held an in-house mixed tournament for the Aidan Coyle Memorial Coyle and I was lucky enough to have been invited along to the closing stages of the competition, which was held last Wednesday 8th May in St. Mary’s Hall. After some cracking and highly competitive games the final was contested between Johnny Woods/Gillian Harte and Colm McCormick/Martina McDermott. The final was an absolute thriller with all players producing some outstanding shots but in the end Johnny Woods & Gillian Harte managed to secure the win and they collected the cup which was presented by Gerry Coyle (Chairman of the Badminton Club). Please visit the Rockcorry GAA Facebook page to view a selection of photographs.
