Monaghan Succumb to Cavan

Cavan            2 -17

Monaghan   1 -07

An understrength Monaghan side battled against the odds in Kingspan  Breffni  in the first round of the Ulster Junior Championship on Sunday last when Cavan’s  Roisin O’Keefe and Brid Boylan proved a menace for the Monaghan defence.

Playing against a stiff breeze in the first half and forced to play on the astro turf pitch proved difficult for the Farney women  but they held on bravely in the first quarter with Michelle Morgan earning three points , two of these resulting from frees. On numerous occasions”Monaghan Rose “ Eleanor Mc Quaid  Shauna Finnegan and Mairead Mc. Carron distributed to the forward line but their efforts were wasted when the prevailing wind carried them wide.

O’Keefe, Boylan , Shannon Gill and Ericka Gill stretched the lead beyond reproach scoring 1 -9 without reply before the half time whistle,  leaving Monaghan trailing at the break.

Cavan          1 -12

Monaghan  0 -3

Morgan rebounded with the first score of the second half  when she split the Cavan defence to place one over the bar in the 3rd minute, Roisin O’Keefe replied with a point  and her Captain Brid Boylan followed with a goal in the 9th minute,  however  2 minutes later and not to be outdone Monaghan’ Ailbhe Boyle rattled the  Cavan net but they in turn replied with two points in quick succession from Emir Brady and Aileen Smyth.

Monaghan  defence of Eilish Mc. Carron, Aisling Greenan  Catherine Tomany were under severe pressure in the period that followed with Goalie Marie Greenan taking off some brilliant saves. Morgan once again came up trumps in the 22minute before O’Keefe and Morgan once again swapped points. O’Keefe completed Cavan’s score with a point in the closing minutes.

Monaghan are home to Armagh on the 12th May with the outcome deciding who meet Cavan in the Ulster Final.

Senior League

Clontibret           0 -10

Castleblayney    2 -04

Last years Champions Castleblayney could only claim one point from the 2nd. round of the League when a tough encounter with Clontibret  ended all square in O’Neill Park on Friday evening last, having a similar outcome the previous week  when they were home to Truagh. This was a game that could have gone either way, given that both teams were level at the interval and on several occasions in a tit for tat format.

Emma Forde raised the green flag 3 minutes before the half time whistle following Rachael Markey’s point and two from Elaine Mc. Kernan to leave the sides  level  once again at the break after  Michelle Morgan tapped over five points and Nicola Morgan got one from play.

Half time score :Castleblayney  1 -3

Clontibret       0 -6

The second half was a similar encounter with three out of the four points coming from Michelle Morgan and the fourth from Ailbhe Boyle while Castleblayney’s Emma Forde once again mustered a goal and Mary Mc. Elroy completed the scores  with a point.
