MELLANS HANDBALL

Presentation Night. The club are holding their annual adult presentation night tomorrow evening (Friday) in St.Mellans Complex, proceedings are starting at 9:30pm, we ask all that won competitions during the season to please attend and all member to come down to give a bit of support on the night.

Adult Club Doubles Competitions.  The 2 adult doubles competitions were played Monday past, in the High House final Gary Treanor(T) & Patrick Mc Kenna(PH) beat Ryan Treanor(T) & Prionsas Mc Kenna(P) , this was a very tight affair and neither side was giving way and the 3rd and final game was won 21-20, the Coalisland Fireplace final was won by Christopher Mc Kenna(D) & John Kelly who beat Kevin Treanor & Eamon Todd this was also a tight game and could have went anyway as the winners prevailed on a score line of 21-17, 21-20, well done to the winners on the night and hard luck to both sets of runners-up.

U11 Handball Blitz. The county “U11 Blitz” was held last Saturday morning in St.Mellans Complex where 18 juveniles battled it out in a cup and plate competition, we had 5 players from the club taking part, Ronan & Ethna Boyle, Ryan Harnet, Ciaran Bogue and Conor Mc Ginn, we had no success in the cup competition but we had a victory in the plate competition as Ronan Boyle beat Alindas from the Harps club in the final 15-4, 15-9, all players played well but some were a little bit rusty so more planning will have to be done in the future to organize these blitz’s much more deeper within the handball season, a big word of thanks must go to Martin Mc Entee and Michael Mc Carron for organising and running of the competition as both men refereed and over seen 26 games from 10:40 to 1:30, well done men, it is vital that we concentrate on our juveniles over the next few years because we are an aging club and especially over the season just past we have had a lot of members celebrating big birthdays with a “0” in the count.

Harps Handball

The County U-11 Blitz competition was a tremendous success with 18 boys and girls representing clubs from Bawn, Magheracloone, Monaghan Harps, St. Mellan’s and Tydavnet.  The final pairing, representing Monaghan Harps, saw Tiernan O’Rourke take on Deivydas Kaklauskas.  On this occasion Deivydas came out on top over 2 games of high quality.  Tiernan played his normal passing game mixed with excellent serves.  The low side-arm shots of Deivydas, however, made all the difference and he produced many killshots.
The Plate competition saw Ronan Boyle (St. Mellan’s) take on Ailandas Jocys (Harps).  Ailandas was the surprise player of the competition and was unlucky to meet his clubmate Deivydas in the first round.  Ronan Boyle deservedly won the Plate competition over 2 games.
There were some great performances from the Monaghan players and the skill shown by Louise Mc Ginnity to reach the quarter-finals was a revelation.  Another surprise packet was seven year old Seán Callan who did so well to reach the last 8.  This is a player with a great future in the game.   Others to watch out for are James Allen, Mikolaj Szkup and David Allen.  Thank you to those adults who were on hand to make sure everything ran smoothly.  In particular Margaret Allen, Michael Mc Carron and Martin Mc Entee had everything well organized.  The general consensus was that there should be a lot more Blitz-type competitions as they give every player a chance to take part.
