A guide to Club Cultural Officer duties  &  Scór Calendar for 2013/14

“Mol an Óige agus Tiocfaidh Sí”

Clubs should appoint an Irish Language and Cultural Officer whose key role will be to organise Scór and other cultural and language activities in the Club.

Every club should take part in Scór. No other cultural or sporting body has anything like Scór, a framework that allows locals to take part in activity right across the cultural spectrum and within a clear community-based and amateur context.

Scór

Scór provides a great opportunity for people who may not participate in our games to become involved and be part of the Club. Other interested people from outside the Club, particularly parents, should be involved. The success of TV talent shows indicates how popular it has become for young people to perform on stage.

Scór is made up of 8 competitions as follows

Rince Foirne                           Ceilí dancing
Amhránaíocht Aonair            Solo singing
Ceol Uirlise                            Instrumental music
Aithriseoireacht/Scéalaiocht  Recitation / Storytelling
Bailéad Ghrupa                      Ballad group
Tráth na gCeist                      Question time
Nuachleas                               Novelty act
Rince Seit                               Set dancing

An Teanga

Promotion of the Irish Language is an important activity for GAA clubs. There are a number of simple ways in which clubs can foster Irish at the local level.

  • Use the Irish version of the Club name in prominent places e.g. letterheads, kit bags, playing gear, score boards
  • Bi lingual signs
  • Use some Irish at meetings
  • Offer Gaeltacht scholarships to local children
  • Take part in Seachtain na Gaeilge
  • Host Irish classes
  • Put some simple Irish phrases on Club website

Music, Song, Dance, Art & Drama

  • Host at least one Cultural event each year e.g. tie this in with St Patrick’s Day.
  • Make sure all Club events have an Irish Cultural dimension
  • A Gaelic Art component into any Club new build project
  • Facilitate the teaching of Irish dancing and/or music classes.

Heritage

Clubs should make every effort to contribute to the local heritage of the area, contribute to local histories, take part in lectures /talks/events focusing on local heritage.
