The Late Macartan Mac Cormack (RIP)

The club wish to express sincere sympathy to Geraldine and the Mac Cormack family Corracloughan on the recent passing of Macartan. Macartan played for Blackhill from 1940 initially when on leave from boarding in St.Macartan’s College where he won a MacRory Cup medal in 1940, famously outplayed Cavan legend P.J. Duke in 1941, and played at midfield in the winning MacRory Cup team of 1942.  He is fondly remembered for always winning the sprints at the annual Blackhill sports days of that period. After returning from the U.S.A. in October 1954 Macartan resumed his playing career with Blackhill and lined out in defence on the 24^th of October 1954 v Castleblayney Faughs, showing glimpses of the talent that had made him a county star. He was one of five Mac Cormack brothers (Fr Enda, Finbar, Aidan and Sean being the others) who played for the Blackhill Emerald’s in the clubs most successful era from the early 1930’s to the mid 1950’s.
