Clones

By michael Tue 9th Apr

Sam Maguire is coming to Clones today Thursday the 11th of April.  This is a wonderful occasion for the club and we’d be very hopeful of a big turnout of all our members in the Creighton this evening.  There’ll be a chance for everyone young and old for a professional photograph.  We’re also using this as an opportunity to launch the clubs merchandise which is available for sale and for pre-order.  There are Jersey’s, Hoodies, Beanies, Umbrellas, Mugs, Pens, Balls, Water Bottles and much more.  Sam will be on the diamond from 12:30pm, followed by visits to both primary schools along with Largy College.  He’ll then go out to the Sacred Heart nursing home followed by an appearance at the under 16’s match in the field.  Then it’s on to the Creighton for a Q&A session with Senior players past, present and mystery guest.  Eugene Hamill will be there with his studio to take professional photographs of Sam.  Come on everybody and touch the magic that is the Sam Maguire.

Easter Camp Well done to all the Juveniles who took part in the Easter camp last week, special thanks to the County Coaching Staff including Fintan, Jake and James, there were 80 children taking part in this event which was a fantastic turnout.  The spirit of the Gael that’s in our games is alive and well in our youngest members.  “Mol an Oige agus tiocfaidh said”.

Senior Team; The Seniors played a challenge match against Edendork on Sunday evening last, Clones played well and we look forward to the lads next match against Corduff this Sunday in Corduff, Throw-in 2:00pm.

Reserves: The reserves collected both points on Saturday evening as Killany couldn’t field a team.  Clones lost to Aghabog however on Wednesday evening last in the reserve league despite scoring five goals.  Clones played some very exciting passages of play and equally played into the hands of the opponents on other occasions.  Behind by six at half time and ahead by one going into the last 10 mins Aghabog finished the stronger.

Team: John Holland, James Gibson, Eugene Holland, Eoin Kelly, Daragh Graham, Emmet McEntee, Ciaran Kelly, Fintan Cunningham, Ross Adamson, Cian O Connor, Sarto Quigley, Ethan Audely, Gerard Foy, Patrick McCarville, Niall Nolan (jun) subs used Colly McCaughey, Ryan O Connor, Colm O Gorman, Jeffrey Elliot, Shane Slowey. Losing out 3:17 to 5:06, next game away to Toome next Wednesday, throws in at 7:15pm.

Minor Training; A great win for St. Tiarnachs against Emerald Sarsfields on Tuesday last on a scoreline of 2:13 to 2:09.  An immense team performance, this panel is made up of ten Clones lads and ten Eire Og lads, a lot of these lads were also on the Largy College team who won the VEC County title this year.  It seems that winning has become a good habit for these boys.  No pressure then so lads! Next game is against Doohamlet away throw-in 7:15pm on Tuesday next support if you can.

Under 16’s; Good to see the boys (U-16s) getting off to a good start today in the League opener away to Eire Og. Clones 4-15 Eire Og 1-4. Hard work at Midfield was the platform for some great attacking moves and well taken scores. This complimented a determined and aggressive defence who didn’t like to concede ground! With a long season ahead the boys will be keeping their feet on the ground but its great to see the hard work they have put in training over the last 6 weeks pay off in the 1st game. Onwards and Upwards! Team/Panel and Scorers -13 aside: C.Beggan, D. McDermott, D. Jilistratovs, M. Newell, C. McDonald (1-0), D. Freeman, J. Mealiff (2-5), R. Rooney, L. Reihill, C. Cadden (0-7), F. Beggan (0-1), D. McAloon (1-2), D. McCabe. Subs: E. Mulvanny, D. Alford, S. McGovern, R. McGovern, J. McNamee, S. McElwain, D. Slowey. E. McQuaid (injured).  Training continues on “The holy ground” every Monday and Wednesday.  Next game is against Latton this evening.  Sam will be in attendance.  Support if you can.

Under 14’s; this amalgamated team with Currin played Inniskeen on Saturday last, things didn’t go St. Tiarnachs way, they played Truagh the previous Thursday night and also came up short.  Our juvenile officer Joanne Reihill pointed out early in the season that this was a very difficult division for this group of players, there was no ground given at county level and whilst our lads are slightly out of their depth they continue to play with great heart, the right attitude and whilst things maybe difficult it’s a great learning experience.  Next game is this Saturday at home against Magheracloone where we hope to change our fortunes.  I’d encourage everyone to try and support these home games.

Under 12’sboth got a run out last Thursday night in Currin against Eire Og in two local challenge games. Team 1 lost out narrowly in a keenly contested game played at a high tempo right to the final whistle. The low score line was evidence if needed of just how competitive and indeed how much progress the team has made in the last 6 weeks of training. Team 2 continued were they left off against Emyvale last week and in the end had a comfortable win, just reward for some great teamwork and hard work. Jason Lynch, James Cadden & Oisin Flynn deserve mention for their display on the night but it was very much teamwork that secured the win. Well done to all.

Go Games Refereeing we had 10 lads who took part in the juvenile refereeing course last week.  Well done, the lads will start their refereeing at the end of the month.

Best Wishes:  to former club chairman Jimmy Connolly who took a bad turn on Sunday, having been airlifted from the field, Jimmy was then taken to hospital where he’s understood to be doing well.  A fháil go maith go luath, get well soon Jimmy our thoughts are with you, Kathleen and family.
