Monaghan’s senior footballers missed out on the chance to clinch promotion from the Allianz National Football League Division Three with a game to spare when they lost to Roscommon on Sunday, while the hurlers stayed bottom of the Allianz National Hurling League Division 3A after losing at home to Tyrone. The ladies footballers continued their 100% record, however, in their defence of the NFL Division One title with a comfortable win away to Laois. The goals came from Niamh Kindlon, Therese McNally, Ciara McAnespie and the unlikely source of goalkeeper Linda Martin (via a penalty) as Monaghan put Laois to the sword.
On the club scene, the inclement weather put paid to a majority of the weekend’s fixtures, including the entire first round in the Gerry’s Prepared Veg. Under-14 Football League. Éire Óg hammered Toome in the sole Platinum Tanks Reserve Football League Division 3 match. Clontibret eased past Latton in the only game to go ahead in the McElvaney Recycling Under-21 Football League Division One, where Scotstown got a walkover from Castleblayney, while Aughnamullen edged out Carrickmacross in Division Two.
