Volunteer of the Year
Ard Comhairle approached County Camogie Boards seeking nominations from clubs for “Volunteer of the Year” for the season 2012. This new award is being made in order to acknowledge the huge effort put in by many people in all clubs within the county during the year. The overall winner is Bridget Mc. Kenna from the Iniskeen club. The Award Winner from each County will also be honored at a special lunch at the All Ireland Club Final day on the 3rd of March 2013.
Brigid McKenna joined Iniskeen Camogie Club just over four decades ago and epitomizes what Camogie is all about. She began her playing career with County Louth before she married local Iniskeen man Patsy McKenna and while Brigid moved into the parish of Iniskeen camogie was put on hold for a number of years while she set about rearing her four children.
But the love of the game was still tugging at Bridget’s heart strings and it was Iniskeen’s gain when their best stalwart adorned the Iniskeen colours to join a very young squad. She quickly settled in to her new position where the team went from strength to strength.
As the years progressed she was known to have what could be described as a “sports shop “in her car boot which she hauled throughout the County for all the games, from sticks, to tape, to plasters, to jerseys, and even “ Killanny” water no less. Brigid was on hand, let it be celebrations or commiserations . But it is not just the contribution on the field, it is her enthusiasm in all things Camogie, .
Having only recently retired from playing the game, Bridget is currently Honorary President of the club and has held numerous positions within the club and County Board over the years. She has been a role model for many camogs in the club and understands the importance of passing on the game to the next generation. Had it not been for her example of dedication, commitment leadership, and organization, the club might not have survived.
The Iniskeen Camogie Club and Monaghan County Board take great pleasure in nominating Bridget
for this prestigious award and wish her every success in Croke Park at the weekend.
