Sean’s Notes

 Annual General Meeting.

Members turned out in large numbers for the clubs AGM held in the complex on Friday night last. At the outset Club Chairman Ciaran Mc Entee welcomed everyone, and later during his address they heard him make an impassionate plea to those present not to dismiss the option of serving on the club’s executive committee. He outlined the important role the club played in our community; he thanked all who had assisted in any capacity throughout the year particularly those who had helped in the absence of a permanent treasurer. He was fulsome in his gratitude for the contribution made by the executive committee members who were not seeking re-election for the coming year, singling out Cultural Officer Roseleen Mc Elvaney for her effort in promoting Irish music, song, and dance via the clubs support and participation at all level of Scor; as well as establishing a monthly Irish music night in the club social centre on the 2nd Friday night of each month, a date that was now firmly fixed in the club social calendar.

Club Secretary had everyone’s attention as he delivered a comprehensive review of club activity. Of the Jubilee DVD The Rewind he said “this took an enormous amount of effort and time and no one can argue that one man, Conor Mc Morrow, brought together what turned out to be a fantastic overview of our club’s history that will be cherished for many years to come”. On launch night which took place is May with Colm O Rourke RTE Sunday Game pundit doing the honours he said “Colm was a truly engaging speaker who gave an inspiring talk about the importance of the GAA club in a rural community and added in some colourful tales of his playing days and his work as a pundit” he acknowledged the work done by the DVD committee saying “we are truly grateful to them for this magnificent DVD”

On the playing field he said we welcomed a new senior manager in Jim Hyland from Denn assisted by two club men Adrian Larkin and Felix Mc Elvaney. This trio left no stone unturned throughout the year but unfortunately the  season did not get off to a good start as over 10 of the playing panel  were absent through injury, adding “ no club in the country can afford losses like that and not see an impact, results did not go our way and we were relegated to Junior ranks for 2013 season”  He took encouragement for the future  as the long injury list allowed the introduction of new blood and it was heartening “ to see that these young players were able to step  up to the pace of intermediate football and hold their own”. He praised the work of the juvenile committee and the reliability of all volunteers who ensured weekly Monday night bingo sessions ran smoothly. On the development front he outlined the current position regarding the provision of covered accommodation for supporters and the estimated cost involved. He congratulated pupils from both St Michael’s and St Mary’s N.S who represented the club in Scor Spraoi. He thanked Roseleen for her work and dedication to the Cultural Officers post and wished her all the best for the future. He acknowledged the  tremendous work being done in harnessing local talent and the time and effort of those overseeing not only Ceili Dancing classes…now in their third season, but also the unstinting  preparation given to participants for  Spraoi Scor and Scor na nOg competitions. He expressed sympathy stating” some great players had been called to their eternal reward Larry Mc Connon, Pat Bagan and Vincent Hagan. Also our deepest sympathy to  members who had lost loved ones during this year. May they rest in peace”. Concluding, he said “I thoroughly enjoyed my two years as secretary of this great club and would stay on only I have other issues to look after next year!”

Youth committee secretary Stephen Hagan outlined activities on the underage front; he spoke of the declining numbers right across the club’s underage spectrum. The pressing need to have our teams entered at the correct competitive level going forward to ensure our worthwhile competitiveness and development. He complimented all coaches, text communicators, and first aid personnel  involved with our juvenile teams, and singled out the U12 and U14 shield winning squads on bring silver wear to the club. He also thanked parents for their continuing support, nowhere was this support more evident he said than at the sponsored walk/fun run which was a tremendous success and is sure to be maintained in our juvenile calendar. Concluding he thanks all sponsor involved with the club.

The good news from the financial report showed we operated in the black, although the decimal point and a zero or two did cause some verbal exchanges; suffice to say all queries were answered and explained to everyone satisfaction.  Details of Committee make up in next week’s issue.
