It was a disappointing weekend for Monaghan’s representatives in the Ulster club football championships. Doohamlet went so close to reaching a second Ulster IFC Final in three years, but they fell just short against Cookstown. Despite conceding an early goal to John Gilmore, 14-man Doohamlet competed very well throughout, with Paul McArdle kicking three points and half-backs Colin Walshe and Darren Connolly also on the scoresheet, but the goal proved crucial as Cookstown hung on to win by 1-6 to 0-8.
Drumhowan were also unable to return to the Ulster JFC Final after falling away badly in the second half of their semi-final against An Port Mór. The teams traded points regularly in the opening half, at the end of which they were level at 0-6 each, but the Blackwatertown side took complete control in the second half, consigning Drumhowan, who finished with 12 men, to a heavy defeat.
There were mixed fortunes for Donaghmoyne’s ladies in their All-Ireland semi-finals. Their junior team lost out by 3-6 to 0-6 against Boherbue from Cork on Saturday, but the Fontenoys seniors booked another All-Ireland final appearance with a convincing win over Shelmaliers of Wexford on Sunday.
