Sean Mac Diarmada Notes 1-10-12
Under 14
Pride of place this week goes to our U-14 team who won the Div 2 shield after a thrilling extra time victory against Killanny on Saturday last. Playing against the breeze in the first quarter the lads defended superbly with keeper Ryan Connolly making a couple of fine saves. Young Ryan Mc Elvaney was playing a blinder at half back and Sean Grant was a rock at full back. With the backs playing so well we went in at the end of the first quarter 1 point ahead due to super goal from Shane Kelly. The second quarter started with our lads on top with impressive displays at midfield from Ashley Corrigan and Aaron Mc Nally. Team captain Martin Mc Guirk led by example at the back with his usual tigerish defending ably assisted by big Darren Morgan and the ever dependable Mark Murphy. We didn’t make full use of the strong breeze but led a half time by 3 helped greatly by a great point by Damon Hagan. Again the lads played their best football against the wind with a brilliant third quarter display. Paddy Mc Phillips was proving a real handful at full forward and he set up our second goal which was expertly dispatched by Jason Kearns and then scored the third himself. With Luke Perkins putting in a great shift at half forward allied with Shane Kelly covering every blade of grass in Cremartin our lads ended the third quarter 7 points ahead. However the sting in the tail came in the last quarter when Killanny playing against the wind started a great comeback. They pegged back a couple of points and our young men seemed to panic. A Killanny goal then added real tension and our lads were hanging on. As the game entered the last minute Killanny sprang one last attack and scored a deserved equaliser. Killanny then took the lead for the first time at the start of extra time when they scored their second goal. However our young men dug deep and helped by the fresh legs of young James Murphy, we got the only point of the first half of extra time to trail by two at half time. With only 7 minutes remaining our lads responded superbly and with Sean Grant taking a stranglehold at midfield and the defense well on top we scored four unanswered points to record a two point victory. Well done lads it was richly deserved .Big thanks to the team mentors, Stephen, Bernard, Matthew , Shane and Nigel. Also big thank you to team medic Veronica and finally Kathleen for all those endless texts. It was a long year but the reward was worth it.
