Castleblayney won a keenly-contested Maguire Transport Minor Football Championship Division One Final against Monaghan Harps in Clones on Sunday. Blayney made the better start, but found themselves trailing for much of the match after Carl Foentjies punched home the game’s only goal for the Harps, who could have been more than just a point up at half-time. The sides remained neck-and-neck throughout the second half, but Blayney gained the upper hand in the closing stages, led by captain Barry Hanratty, and points from Aaron McNamara and David McMahon (two) to ensure a narrow win; their first MFC title since 2004.
There was a clean sweep for Monaghan clubs in the first round of the Ulster ladies championships on Sunday, with Donaghmoyne completing a unique double. The Fontenoys’ junior team saw off Tyrone side Strabane before their seniors annihilated Lisnaskea from Fermanagh, with Cathriona McConnell accounting for 4-7. Meanwhile, Magheracloone eased past Ballymartin of Down in the IFC, inspired by county corner-back Christina Reilly, who scored 2-8 from midfield.
Aghabog and Clones will contest the Eurotech Junior Football League Final next Sunday after they won Saturday’s semi-finals. Seán O’Brien kicked 1-5 to inspire a one-point victory for Aghabog, who held off a late comeback from Emyvale, whose promotions hopes are now over after they led the way for most of the year. Clones had a comfortable win at home to championship winners Drumhowan in the other semi.
Inniskeen took the last semi-final place in the Monaghan Electrical Intermediate Football League when they struck for a late goal to edge out Cremartin in an exciting battle on Saturday. Rockcorry beat table-toppers Doohamlet to secure a home semi-final, while Aughnamullen had a narrow win over Donaghmoyne. Inniskeen will travel to Doohamlet in the last four on October 21, while Rockcorry will host Donaghmoyne.
