Castleblayney qualify for Ulster Club Final
Castleblayney 1 – 05
Armoy(Antrim) 0 – 04
Castleblayney may have waited 8 years to win a County Championship but little did they think at the start of the year that an Ulster Club title would also be in sight They had an easy win over Laragh of Cavan in the first round of the Bridie Mc Meniman Ulster Club Junior Championship Shield Competition and had a home venue on Sunday last when they outclassed a superb Armoy of Antrim in a low scoring game in Drumhowan.
Tight marking denied both teams of vital scores for lengthy periods with Bronagh Black of Armoy supplying 2 points from play in the first half and Eileen Mc Elroy opening the scores for Castleblayney when she sent the ball over in the first quarter, it wasn’t until 5 mins before the half time whistle that Amber Lam converted a free for Castleblayney to leave the sides level with 2 points each at the break.
Castleblayney got off to a good start in the second half when Mc Elroy was fouled as she broke through the Armoy defence and Amber Lam put her side ahead when she converted a’ 45 on her second attempt. The home side were on an attacking spell when Niamh Brennan delivered a fine pass to Elaine Mc Kernan who blasted to the net in the 10th minute, she repeated the action seconds later but was denied by the Goalkeeper and Lam once again got another point on the scoreboard in the resulting ’45. Niamh Brennan pushed her side into a comfortable position when she put one between the uprights half way through the second half.
Bronagh Mc Donald and Sinead Mc Cormick narrowed the deficit in the 20th and 22nd minute when they hit over 2 points, one from play and the other from a free but Castleblayney finished the fitter and with Orla Mc Carthy controlling the half back line and an all round team effort, they finished with 4 points to spare. Castleblayney now meet Mullaghabawn of Armagh in the Ulster Final in Armagh Athletic Grounds on Sunday 21st October.
Fitzpatrick Coaches Senior League Final
This has to be Castleblayney’s year as they also contest the Senior League Final when they take on Clontibret on Sunday next in Drumhowan at 12 noon. Clontibret had a level of consistency in the lead up to the final where they finished top of the League and Castleblayney will have the extra matches under their belt from their recent good run in the Ulster Club Championship therefore Sunday’s match should come down to the wire when Clontibret will be aiming to take the coveted trophy back Northward.
