JFL Final Replay:

Sadly there was to be no fairytale ending for us in the Dr Ward Cup final replay in Scotstown on Sunday last. This was a game where just nothing seemed to go right for us from start to finish. Dermot Smyth was forced off injured after five minutes. We then conceded an unfortunate goal and as if to compound our disastrous start, Shane O’Brien was then dismissed for a second yellow card offence. And all this inside the first 15 minutes!  To the team’s credit, we did not roll over and despite trailing 1-04 to 0-02 at half-time, a Stephen McPhillips goal early in the second half brought us back to within two points of Clones. The game was still in the melting pot midway through the second half as Clones led 1-05 to 1-02. There was to be no great escape on this occasion though and the final fifteen minutes saw Clones use their numerical advantage to good effect as they increasingly were able to take advantage of the spare man and our tiring legs to run out winners on a 1-10 to 1-03 score-line. The nature of our defeat and in particular our failure to hang on in the drawn game when we looked to have done enough to win will mean that this will be a particularly long winter as we look back on what might have been. It should be remembered though that not all that long ago we looked to be dead and buried in the Junior League and it took some good old fashioned Aghabog spirit to see us dig deep to finish the year very strongly and secure a semi final and subsequent final place. It has been a long, hard ten months since January and the players deserve great credit for their efforts throughout this year. Great credit should also go to our management team of Gerry O’Brien, Colin Malone, Seanie McPhillips and Joey Kelly. These men have shown great commitment to Aghabog over the last two years and we have reached two reserve league semi finals, a Junior Championship semi-final which we lost following a replay and now a Junior League final which unfortunately was also lost in a replay. While sadly no silverware will reside in Aghabog this year, we have a young team coupled with a few experienced heads and if we can stick together hopefully the experiences gained will stand to us in the future.

Intermediate league semi-final: Aghabog and Magheracloone must meet again in this semi-final as even extra time couldn’t separate these two teams. Training continues this week as per management. See fixtures for time and date of replay.

Hard Luck: to the men’s team who lost out to Clones in the junior league final last Sunday.

Congratulations: To Aisling Smyth and Christopher McBride who got engaged at the weekend.

Congrats: to all who participated in the Scor last weekend and good luck to Katie Boyle who represents us in the next round.
