CLUB NOTES

25th September 2012

Sympathy

On behalf of all in the club I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family, close relatives and friends of the late Packie Durnan. Packie was a former member, supporter and player with the club and featured on the 1958 team that defeated Drumhown to win the Ematris Cup at a Parish sports held in Dartrey. He also took an active interest in the administration of the club and served on numerous committees in various roles and in 1999 he was the recipient of the clubs most prestigious honour the Hall of Fame award. May he rest in peace. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam

The game will take place at Pairc Naomh Mhurie and throw-in time is 5.00pm. On Saturday 13th October we have another home game against Doohamlet and throw-in time is 4.30pm

Golf Classic

We held our inaugural fund raising golf classic last Saturday 22nd September and we had a great turnout with over a hundred golfers on the Clones Golf Course. The weather was great with blue skies and lovely sunshine and despite all the recent rain the course was in tip-top condition which really contributed to a fantastic day as all golfers headed out to play an enjoyable round of golf. There were numerous highlights on the day, far too many to mention individually, and thankfully there was no reports of any rabbits or ducks meeting there doom from white, spherical, dimpled, projectiles or angry men running around with a ‘stick’! However, I imagine the groundsman had to work overtime this week having to repair a lot of divots the size of the Grand Canyon! Anyway, moving on the presentation of prizes took place in the Maple Bar later that night and the overall winning team was Noel Brady, Paul Igoe, Martin Clegg and Martin Sherlock. Other prizes were hotly contested and the following teams won:- 2nd Prize: Paul Fitzpatrick, Ivan Fitzpatrick, Barry Duffy, Austin Curran. 3rd Prize: Paddy Mckeown, Gerry Treanor, Macartan Sammon, Kenny Farrelly. 4th Prize: Joe Smith, Seamus Brady, George Crowe, Paddy McKeown. 5th Prize: Paul Jenkins, Fergal Connolly, Ray McCarron, Declan McCalleon. 6th Prize: Jim Kerr, Dermott, Gabriel Kerr, Thomas McCormick. 7th Prize: Gabriel Brady, Tom McQuillan, Willie Lythco, Mike Keane. Nearest the Pin went to Macartan Sammon with the longest drive going to Fergal Reilly. We also had prizes for teams made up from non-regular golfers with the winning team going to Noel Carroll, Aaron Clerkin, Pauric Carroll and Cathal Sheridan with Colm McCormick, Mark McCormick, Conor McGeough and Declan Freeman coming in second and congratulations to all winners. As the golfers mulled over their performance of the day they pondered on other honours and they went to Matt Dornan for the best dressed golfer with Teresa Hannawin taking the ladies title.  Colin Quinn and Seamus Carroll share the record for losing the most golf balls and I understand they have created a new Guinness World Record! Cathal Sheridan claimed the title for the “fluckiest shot ever” when he holed a thirty-metre putt and has been on cloud-nine since! When Felix Grannaghan hit out-of- bounds on the 14th hole he emulated the magic of the late Seve Ballesteros with a memorable iron-shot from the rough and around the trees to claim “Shot of the Day”! The nineteenth hole was probably the most competitive and closely contested hole on the day and the experience of Gerry Coyle, Hugh McGuirk, Brian McGorman and Ian Harrison proved to be the difference as they showed they were far more comfortable in their natural habitat and displayed their other ‘skills’ were far more superior to the younger generation! I have to say, that feedback from golfers was very positive and everyone enjoyed the experience immensely and on behalf of the club I would like to take this opportunity to thank once again our main sponsors Town of Monaghan Co-op and McNally Crane Hire and to all those companies and individuals who sponsored tee-boxes. I would also like to thank all the teams who participated on the day and for making the event such a wonderful occasion. Without your support and goodwill the efforts of the club could not continue and we deeply appreciate your support and loyalty. Many thanks to the Clones Golf Club for the use of their fine facilities and assistance on the day and a massive well-done to our golf committee for their dedication in planning this event. They were the driving force behind this golf classic and we look forward to seeing you swing in next year’s event.
