ROCKCORRY G.A.A.
CLUB NOTES
4th September 2012
Monaghan Electrical Intermediate League
Have you ever noticed how the weather can sometimes influence your mood and everyone around you? For example, dark, wet and rainy days makes you feel gloomy and tired but clear, dry and sunny days can leave you feeling cheerful and energized. Equally, the performance of the club can have the same effect! Take last weekend, for instance, which was very busy and exhausting, but nevertheless a very enjoyable couple of days and one we’ll remember for a long time because our senior team picked up two victories in the league campaign and our ‘wee’ under 12 warriors claimed the league title. So, yes, the village was certainly buzzing with excitement and there were plenty of happy, smiling faces. It started last Friday night (31st August), when our senior team travelled to play Cremartin and they bounced back from their recent defeats to secure a deserved victory in the Monaghan Electrical intermediate football league. We built the foundations for this win when we opened up a lead of 0-5 to 0-10 after the first moiety having played some delightful football, with the running off the ball by players a joy to watch. In fairness, the lads worked hard, they dug deep and put up a strong resilient performance and acquitted themselves very well and all players played their part to achieve the win on a final score-line Cremartin 0-11 Rockcorry 1-13. This was precisely the boost we needed and gave our team management and players a much needed lift as they travelled to Threemilehouse last Sunday 2nd September to take on Sean McDermott’s. This game proved to be another very exciting, nail-biting and bruising encounter and we were made to fight all the way in this highly entertaining match which ebbed and flowed throughout. It was a real war of attrition, and the sides were level on six occasions throughout the game, and our lads gave as good as they were getting and after weathering the storm we showed great leadership and self-control in the last ten minutes to notch over some crucial scores to fully merit our victory on a final score-line Sean McDermott’s 2-7 Rockcorry 1-13. Under 12 “Division 5 League Champions”
Somebody once said and I quote “any day you bring home silverware to the club, is good day” and I would like to echo those sentiments because last Saturday, 1st September, our under 12 team edged out neighbours Aghabog in the final of the Division 5 league competition after a fabulous match. Truthfully, the game of Gaelic football was the real winner because this was a tremendous final that was played in a welter of excitement throughout and after an absorbing encounter we gained a well-deserved victory on a score-line 5-9 to 5-5. On a glorious sunny afternoon a decent crowd made the journey to Drumhowan in anticipation of a tight, close game and wow they weren’t disappointed as both teams served up a thrilling and exhilarating contest and they certainly gave both sets of supporters plenty to cheer about. Shane Greenan was an outstanding goal-keeper and the three players in front of him, Kyle Brannigan, Ryan Lynch and Caolan McPhillips were equally effective, and snuffed out numerous dangerous attacks and can feel proud of their displays. At midfield Pauric O’Brien and Curtis Roberts did extremely well and gave everything on the day to help gain this victory. Conleth Keenan and Sean Markey were dangerous and real livewire wing forwards while Gavin West in the centre was a constant thorn in the side of the Aghabog defence and played a major role in the win. During the league campaign we had some fine reserves to call on in earlier matches and the following players were important members of the panel since the start of the year; Emma McKeown, Orla Clerkin, Chole O’Brien, Aaron Smyth, Daire Dillon, Aaron McPhillips and Leon Jones. I would like to sincerely congratulate Conor, Anthony, Sean and Declan who worked tirelessly during the year, looking after and coaching the players. You certainly can be very proud of the team’s achievement in winning this title and I warmly thank you for your continual support and guidance at the grassroot level.
