Clontibret Camogie News.
This weekend is the weekend in the camogie calendar as 3 All-Ireland camogie finals take place in Croke Park on Sunday, and the All-Ireland U-14 Cooper Blitz takes place at a number of venues in Dublin on Saturday.
On Saturday Monaghan will be based in Inisfails Club, Balgriffin for their opening 2 matches – against Kerry and Louth. Having won the U-14 League in Louth certainly the Clontibret contingent, of which 12 of them are represented on the county U-14 panel, will be under no illusions as to the ‘battle royal’ this match will be. Camogie in Kerry is at an all-time high and in recent weeks was featured on RTE’s John Murray Show so Monaghan can afford to take nothing for granted in this match either. In a nutshell, nothing short of 2 wins will suffice in a case of ‘winner takes all’ who then move into the next round. We wish Monaghan every good wish and in particular our representatives and Marie Greenan, Manager: Niamh Kieran, Hannah McSkeane, Chloe McGuigan, Sorcha McDonald, Niamh Hughes, Ríoghnach Duffy, Mary and Jennifer Duffy, Emily Madden, Sioneen Morgan, Eimear McKenna and Melinda McCague.
Then on Sunday it’s off to Croke Park on our annual pilgrimage, with the other underage club members, to watch the All-Ireland finals and also to watch the aforementioned county team participate in a huge parade planned for one of the intervals – possibly between the Intermediate and Senior Finals. Details of match (Sat) and assembly time (Sun) for the county players has only just come to hand so within the coming days departure times from Clontibret will be communicated to all parents. Group tickets have also arrived and can be purchased at training or through the school. (This does not apply to the county players who require a different ticket). Parental/adult help on Sunday would be very welcome (Adult club tickets are available also).
This year Down and Meath will contest the All-Ireland Premier Junior Final at 12 noon, followed by Derry v Galway in the Intermediate final at 2.00pm. At 4.00pm Cork and Wexford will battle in out for the O’Duffy Cup – the highest accolade in a camogie players career. Apart from the obvious interest in Derry and Down, Clontibret supporters will also be hopeful that Gerry McQuaid/J.J Doyle’s charges from Wexford, will exact some retribution on the Rebel County for their defeat of our Ladies footballers last weekend! Many will remember Gerry’s visit to our presentation function earlier this year when he donated a fabulous hurl with all the Wexford Senior and Intermediate county player’s signatures. Good wishes also to Rosie Merry, Monaghan, who will act as 4th Official in the Premier Junior final.
Mention of Rosie calls to mind an intriguing encounter between our seniors and Granemore earlier this week, in the Armagh League Premier Division, which we narrowly lost by a point. A certain Rachael Merry ensured that Rosie ‘earned her keep’ much to the amusement of our players! Definitely would not like to have been in that house-hold afterwards!
Dates for re-fixtures have been received from the Armagh Board as follows:
U-14: Aghagallon v Clontibret, Sat. Sept 22nd
U-14: Crossmaglen v Clontibret, Sat. Sept 29th
Senior fixture against Tullysarron will probably be made following their defeat in the Armagh Senior Championship final to Keady, which took 3 outings to sort out!
U-12: Aghagallon v Clontibret, not re-fixed so far.
Finally congratulations to Muireann Atkinson, Cliona McDonald and Katie McNally on their excellent Junior Cert results on Wednesday!
Enjoy the celebrations girls!
