Scotstown Notes

Seniors: After a narrow win against Monaghan Harps the previous weekend, Carrickmacross were the visitors to Scotstown on Wednesday evening last. This game was a much more comfortable affair for the Blues, who recorded a convincing 5-13 to 1-6 victory. Dermot McCrudden and Orin Heaphey were top-scorers with 2-1 apiece, James Turley got 1-1, Darren Hughes and Shane Carey got 0-3 each, Mark Treanor got 0-2, while Grant and O’Hara both got a point. The side were in action again on Friday evening away to Latton. The home side had the better of the first period, but Scotstown held on to go in level at the break. The Blues put in a strong second-half performance, and battled to a hard earned victory by 1-14 to 1-11. The Scotstown team and scorers against Latton were: 1 Rory Beggan; 2 Donal Morgan, 3 William Carroll, 4 Emmet Caulfield (0-2); 5 Fergal McPhillips, 6 Kieran Hughes, 7 Barry McMeel; 8 Francis Caulfield, 9 Darren Hughes; 10 Shane Carey (0-6), 11 Peter O’Hara, 12 James Turley, 13 Paul Grant (1-3), 14 Orin Heaphey, 15 Dermot McCrudden (0-2). Substitutes used: 17 Elliot Maguire (0-1) for O’Hara (43 minutes), 20 Damien McArdle for McCrudden (61 minutes), 21 James Hamill for Heaphey (67 minutes). Three wins in a row now leaves Scotstown eighth in the table on eleven points with five games left to play. There is a break now until the Seniors resume League action at home to Truagh on August 12th. The Championship game against Magheracloone has been pencilled in for Sunday, August 19th at 7pm in Ballybay.

B Team: The last game before the knockout stages will be away to Magheracloone, which has been rearranged for August 29th. Scotstown currently lead RFL Division One by a single point ahead of Castleblayney, although the Faughs do have a game in hand.

C Team: Scotstown have qualified for the knockout stages of the League, and will play Inniskeen at home in the semi-final. The game is scheduled for Páirc Mhuire on Wednesday, August 22nd with a 7:15pm throw-in.

Under 16’s: The B team lost out to Éire Óg last Thursday evening. Both the Under 16 sides will be in Championship action at the end of August, with the A team drawn away to Killanny, and the B team at home to Rock Emmets.

Under 14’s: Both the A and B teams will be in action again on 11th August. The A team are second in Division One with two games remaining, while the B team have six points left to play for in their three remaining games in Division Five.

Under 12’s: The semi-finals and finals of the under 12 leagues will take place in the second half of August/early September.

Recreational Football: The finals of the Sean Hegarty Shield and the Ned Boylan Cup will take place on Saturday evening at Páirc Mhuire, coinciding with the finish of the Ned Run. The Shield Final will take place first at approximately 5.30pm, followed by the Cup Final afterwards in which the hosts, Scotstown, take on Clontibret. Join us for some vintage football action!

Ciste: The monthly Ciste draw took place last Saturday night, and the winners were: €700 Wayne/Det Voice, c/o Martin McCarville; €300 Gary Larkin, Threemilehouse; €100 Majella Tierney, Gola Crest, Scotstown; €100 Gerard Sherry, Carrowhatta; €100 Neil McGinn, Monaghan; €100 Seamus McElroy, Tydavnet; €100 Ciara Connolly, Milltown, Monaghan; €100 Joe Connolly, Monaghan. Sellers Prizes: €30 Gerard Caulfield & €30 Cormac Sherry. The next draw will take place on Saturday 25th August 2012.

Good Luck: The County Minor footballers face Leinster champions Dublin in the All-Ireland series on Sunday, August 5th at 5.30pm in Páirc Esler, Newry. The best of luck to all involved.

Get Well Soon: Best wishes and a speedy recovery to Barry Cuddy of Truagh after his injury at the weekend.

The Ned Run: The final preparations are being made for the second annual 5 mile charity run will take place this Saturday, August 4th at 4.30pm. The run starts and finishes at the Páirc Mhuire Scotstown GAA grounds, heads back into Scotstown village, left on Main Street, right past Hollywood Park, right again at Hamilton’s Cross, on to McPhillips’ Cross, right on to the Bog Road and straight through the village back to Páirc Mhuire. It is an accurate, timed five mile course with times recorded for everyone finishing within the hour. There will be a clock at the finish line for all competitors to note their individual time. This year there are perpetual trophies on offer for the first competitors across the line in the Male and Female categories. Along with the individual prizes, there will also be competitions for the fastest GAA Club, fastest pub team and the quickest Mr and Mrs. There will be family entertainment (including the recreational football finals) and an evening barbecue. You can beat the rush and pre-register for this year’s run by returning completed entry forms with the €10 fee to Scotstown Post Office. There will also be an opportunity to register on Friday evening from 7.30pm – 9.30pm in the Complex. We will also be accepting donations of cakes, bracks and the like on Friday evening/Saturday morning at the Complex. These will help recharge the batteries of the walkers and runners after the event. Registration on the day of the race will be from 2pm. There will be some traffic restrictions in operation in and around Scotstown for the duration of the run. Marshalls will be on hand to direct traffic, although it would be advisable for drivers not attending the run to avoid the Urbleshanney/Scotstown/Hollywood/Bog Road areas between 4pm and 7pm on Saturday afternoon. All proceeds from the event will go to the Irish Heart Foundation and Monaghan Hospice Home Care.

Condolences: Sympathy is extended to the families and friends of the recently deceased who include: Margaret Rose Macklin, Mullaghmore West and Eugene Brady, formerly of Gallinagh.  

Ladies Seniors: Training continues Tuesday and Thursday at 7.30pm in Kilmore.

Minors and U16s: Training continues every Tuesday and Thursday in Kilmore at 7.30pm. The minors had their first outing of the year on Tuesday last versus Truagh – we wish Alice and the girls the best of luck in the games to follow.
