CLUB NOTES

28th August 2012

McGuigan Builders Championship

Ahoy there me mateys, ARRRRR! Last Friday evening, 24th August, our senior team excited the McGuigan Builders intermediate championship when they played Donaghmoyne at St. Oliver’s Plunkett’s Park, Emyvale. This was a winner-takes-all clash in terms of securing a place in this year’s semi-final and while the game yielded a whopping thirty-one scores, sadly, it was Donaghmoyne’s two goal haul which effectively secured the victory. After disappointing performances against Corduff and Doohamlet this was a welcome return to form as the lads gave a much improved and workmanlike performance in an exciting and action packed match. However, they will feel very unlucky not to have garnered a win and when they look back at this clash they will know it was a game that was definitely left behind! We were certainly good enough and for long periods we were the better team and led for most of the match but in games as tight as this you have to take all your chances and we simply didn’t. Had we capitalized on a few good scoring opportunities it could have been a whole different story, but that’s the way the cookie crumbles! As a result, we left the door open for Donaghmoyne who came back strong and their two goals proved the decisive scores as the match finished Rockcorry 0-14 Donaghmoyne 2-15 after extra time. Under 14 Team

The under 14 footballers were in action in the league campaign last Saturday 25th August when they played Carrickmacross B team at Pairc Naomh Mhuire. The game was played in slippery underfoot conditions and we began the game brightly and after a tough and competitive first quarter we held a 3-0 to 0-2 advantage. The early stages of the second quarter saw greater intensity from Carrickmacross and while we had ample possession we were guilty of some poor finishing and were punished by Carrickmacross who notched up 1-2 to leave the score at the midway point 3-1 to 1-4. On the resumption of play Carrickmacross had the better start and went on to control the third quarter and caused plenty of problems for our defence as they upped their game and added an impressive 4-4 to our 0-2 to take a commanding 3-3 to 5-8 lead going into the last quarter. With their backs to the wall our lads dug deep and to their credit showed great resolve as they took the fight to Carrickmacross and responded with four points. They worked extremely hard and restricted a very strong Carrickmacross side to a solitary point to leave the final score Rockcorry 3-7 Carrickmacross 5-9. Their next game is on Saturday 8th September when they travel to play Clontibret B at 12 noon.

Under 16 Team

Our under 16 team, Rock-Emmets are in action tonight, Thursday 30th August, when they travel play Scotstown B in the championship competition at 6.30pm.

Minor Championship

Our minor team played Cremartin in the second round of the Maguire Transport minor football championship and, in truth, it was a mixed performance by our lads but we did put some good moves together throughout the game, many of them finished with well taken scores. Some of the football played was top class with the movement and passing particularly eye-catching but it was Cremartin’s ability to step it up a gear when the game dictated that was ultimately the main difference between the sides as we

we suffered another defeat against a strong and determined Cremartin outfit in this highly entertaining game that finished Cremartin 3-15 to Rock-Sarsfields 2-9. Please log onto www.rockcorrygaa.ie for full match report and to view a selection of action photographs.
