ROCKCORRY G.A.A.
CLUB NOTES
21st August 2012
Terence Reilly Memorial Shield
I think I’ll begin this week’s club notes with a good news story and start with our under 12 team who played Killeevan for the Terence Reilly Memorial Shield last Saturday 19th August. Anyone that was lucky enough to be in Pairc Naomh Mhuire would have witnessed all that is good about our organisation because the football displayed by both sets of players was truly outstanding. The play was end to end and played in a very sporting manner and after a ‘thrill-a-minute’ match we secured the victory on a score-line Rockcorry 4-11 Killeevan 3-8. Both teams served up a thrilling contest and all players deserve the utmost credit for their hard work and enthusiasm. The kids really played their hearts out and this was recognised at the presentation when the players were greeted with a huge applause from the crowd for their efforts. In presenting the shield our chairman Jimmy McGeough rightly praised the efforts of both teams in providing such an outstanding display of football. It had been a memorable contest and was such a pity that there had to be a losing team at the end of this enthralling contest. On behalf of the club and the Reilly family I would like to express our gratitude to the Killeevan club for taking part in the game. Special thanks to our mentors Conor Brannigan and Anthony Lynch for the time and effort that they spend coaching and looking after the youngsters. A huge thank you to our whistler Anthony Tate who without doubt carries out one of the most demanding and difficult jobs within the organisation but he carried it out with great integrity and ensured the rules were applied no matter what side you were on! Finally, many thanks to our youth officer Pascal Smyth who organised the match and it was nice to the young players receive their medals from our Monaghan minor county representatives Fergal McGeough and Lorcan Smyth. Well done.
Under 12 Team
After last weekend’s semi-final we now know who our opponents will be in the final of the under 12 league competition because Aghabog defeated Castleblayney. The final is fixed for Saturday 1st September so please mark this date down on your calendar and go along to cheer and support the team.
McGuigan Builders Championship
Okay folks, I know, what you’re all thinking; I hyped this game up as a “Clash of the Giants” encounter! In fairness, previous matches between the two sides have always been real humdingers with nothing more than a kick of the ball between the sides! Unfortunately, on this occasion, it was a very lop-sided match as we provided very little resistance or threat to a powerful Doohamlet side as they proved an unstoppable force and as a result had little difficulty overcoming our feeble and lacklustre efforts to cruise to a comprehensive fourteen point victory and secure a place in the semi-final of the McGuigan Builders intermediate football championship on a score-line Rockcorry 1-5 Doohamlet 2-16. Truthfully, we can’t have any complaints, it was a poor and disappointing performance from the team and one that we can’t be proud off. We were out thought, out fought and out played in almost every position on the field and the challenge now is obvious, go out and show your true capabilities!
McGuigan Builders Championship Fixtures
The players and management won’t have time to ponder on their performance last Sunday because they are back in action on Friday 24th August when they play Donaghmoyne in the back-door championship qualifiers. The game is fixed for St. Oliver’s Park, Emyvale and throw-in time is 8pm. The grim statistic facing the lads now is the short turnaround jinx! We have only five days to recover and revive our championship goals and the facts are very simple. Lose and we’re out, win and our reward will be a place in the semi-final of the championship. Lads you did not do yourself justice last Sunday but you now have the opportunity to show what you’re made off, to show the true Rock spirit. So lads, on Friday night when you put on that Green jersey, step up to the plate and put in a performance that YOU can be proud off. If you can truthfully say, ‘I did the best I could, I gave everything I had, I
left every ounce of energy on the field’, then that’s all you can do!

There are time slots available from 8.00am to 3.30pm so please contact Jimmy McGeough or Paddy McKeown to book a time slot that is most suitable for you. There are also exciting opportunities for businesses, families and individuals to advertise by sponsoring a tee or a green for a reasonable €50.
Minor Championship
On Tuesday 14th August our minor team, Rock Sarsfields, travelled to St. Oliver Plunkett’s Park where they played Emyvale in the first round of the Maguire Transport minor football championship. The home side set the pace during the early exchanges but as the
game progressed we quickly turned things around and heading into injury after the first half we enjoyed a 0-3 to 1-5 advantage. However, two minutes into additional time Emyvale split our defence and rifled the ball to the back of the net to leave the score at the interval Emyvale 1-3 Rock Sarsfields 1-5. On the resumption of play Emyvale controlled most of the second half proceedings and scored an impressive 1-3 during the first ten minutes to convert a two point deficit into a four point lead, leading 2-6 to 1-5. We pulled a point back on the 11th minute but Emyvale quickly responded in style and the following ten minutes they fired over six points without reply to lead 2-12 to 1-6. Our lads continued to work hard and scored 1-1 to close the deficit back to five points, 2-12 to 2-7. Unfortunately, Emyvale were not finished and notched over two more points while we completed the scoring to leave the final score Emyvale 2-14 Rock Sarsfields 2-8.
Under 16 Team
Our under 16 team, Rock Emmets, concluded their league campaign last Thursday 16th August when they played Kileevan in the semi-final. Unfortunately a brave and spirited performance by our lads was not enough on the night as a strong and powerful Killeevan side secured a place in the final with a comfortable and a deserved twelve point victory 5-15 to 3-9 and congratulations to them on their victory. Their next game is on Thursday 30th August when they play Scotstown B in the championship competition.
