SFC: The senior footballers fell to a disappointing defeat against Ballybay in the SFC first round last Friday evening. It all started so well, with points by Donal Hahessy (two), Liam Hahessy and Nicholas Treanor handing us a 0-4 to 0-1 lead after 13 minutes, but the concession of a soft goal and being reduced to 14 men left us facing an uphill battle when trailing by 1-3 to 0-4 at half-time. Nicholas Treanor kicked the first point of the second half, but Ballybay hit seven unanswered points to put the game beyond our reach. Nicholas converted another free in the dying minutes, but it was too late for us to get back into it as Ballybay ran out winners on a scoreline of 1-12 to 0-6. We will be back in championship action next Saturday at 5.15 against Latton in the back door. Good luck to Mick, Ciarán, Colin and the players.

Team and scorers: Conall McKenna; Niall Hahessy, Stephen Driver, Gareth Treanor; Paul Rushe, Conor Galligan, Aodhán Óg McAnespie; Peter Coyle, Neil McAdam (Capt.); Paddy Connolly, Nicholas Treanor (0-3, 2f), Nicholas Scott; Liam Hahessy (0-1), Donal Hahessy (0-2), Dean Fanning.

Subs: Shane Smyth for Rushe (H-T), Emmett McArdle for L Hahessy (inj., 43 mins), David Hughes for Coyle (50).

Minors: The minor footballers made a winning start to their championship campaign away to Killanny last Tuesday evening. The lads got off to a slow start, falling four points down, but three points from Fearghal McMahon and one each by Michael Galligan and Shane Loughran brought us level at 0-5 each. The Harps hit the front for the first time with a cracking goal by Evan Doherty, before Anthony Croarkin scrambled home a close-range effort to make it 2-5 to 0-6 in our favour at half-time. Fearghal tapped home a rebound after having a penalty saved early in the second half and he added a couple of points before setting up Shane Loughran for our fourth goal. Evan booted over a fine score and despite Killanny hitting the last three points, our lads had done enough to secure a deserved win. Round two is a home game against Castleblayney tonight (Tuesday) at 7pm.

Team and scorers: Ryan Shields; Pauric Murphy, Niall Treanor, Turlough Clerkin; Myles Dwyer, Shane Maguire (Capt.), Brendan McQuaid; Evan Doherty (1-1), Kevin Loughran; Donal McCarthy, Anthony Croarkin (1-0), Mustafa Gamal; Fearghal McMahon (1-5, 0-3f), Michael Galligan (0-1f), Shane Loughran (1-1).

Subs: Benin Devlin for McCarthy (inj., H-T), Carl Foentjies for Croarkin (36 mins), Ahmed Gamal for Dwyer (49), Paul Smyth for Murphy, Paul Byrne for S Loughran (both 56).

Next up for the minors is the league semi-final away to Scotstown on Monday evening. Best of luck to Maurice, Pádraig, Paddy and the players.

Reserves: The O’Duffy Cup team are due to play the last league game at home to Truagh next Wednesday evening, but keep an eye on the club website and twitter page for confirmation of this fixture.

U-16: The Under-16s lost out in their league semi-final by 4-7 to 3-5 in spite of a brave effort away to Scotstown in difficult conditions last Thursday evening. Despite conceding a goal on ten minutes, our lads competed well in the first half, with Evan Morahan kicking a hat-trick of points (two from frees) to leave us trailing by 1-3 to 0-3 until Scotstown hit a couple of late points to move five clear by half-time. A Ruairí Forde goal and another free by Evan kept our lads in touch until Scotstown scored three goals in quick succession. The Harps showed character to come back and hit an unanswered 2-1 in the final ten minutes, the goals from Reece Treanor and Mustafa Gamal and the point from Evan. Our lads ran out of time in the end, but they still have the championship to prepare for, with either Scotstown or Killanny our opponents on September 6.

Team and scorers: Darragh Hannon; Adam Treanor, James McKenna, David Lowry; Daniel Kelly, John Mulligan (Capt.), Niall Duffy; Tiarnán Bramley, Mustafa Gamal (1-0); Shane McKenna, Evan Morahan (0-5, 4f), Mark Brennan; Ruairí Forde (1-0), Killian Trappe, Reece Treanor (1-0).

Subs: Kevin Lyden for S McKenna, Remy McKenna for Trappe, Kyle O’Leary for Brennan, Conor Flynn.

U-14: Both of our Under-14 football teams are in action at Gavan Duffy Park on Saturday. The Division Five team have a local derby against Feargal O’Hanlons at 12 noon, while the Division One lads play Donaghmoyne at 1.15 in a game that will decide whether they qualify for the semi-finals. Good luck to Michael, Thomas, Ciarán, Brendan, Séamus and all involved.

U-12: The Under-12 Division One team lost at home to Scotstown in the shield semi-final last Saturday. Our lads started well, with early goals by Conor McCrystal and Oisín Power. A point by Conor and a punched goal by Seán Conway, followed by a brace of points from Oisín kept us ahead by 3-3 to 2-3 at half-time. Oisín added another couple of points, either side of a goal from Conor, but Scotstown hit a string of goals to take charge of the game. Conor converted two frees in the closing minutes, but it wasn’t enough to prevent a heavy defeat. Josh Maguire and Dáire Martin came off the bench to find the net in the non-competitive period. Thanks to Chris, Brendan, Declan and everyone who helped out with this team during the year.

Team and scorers: Brendan Óg Duffy; Colin Peppard, Andrew Lyden; Adam O’Neill, Lorcan O’Rourke; Oisín Power (1-4, 0-2f), Seán Conway (1-0); Conor McCrystal (2-3, 0-2f), Dylan Maguire; Corey McArdle, Killian Conlon.

Subs used: Lochlainn Power, Dáire Martin, Josh Maguire, Luke Coyle.

Congratulations: And best wishes on behalf of the club to Ashley White and his wife Michelle on their recent marriage.

Sympathy: The club offers our sympathy to Paul Kelly and family on the death of his grandfather, Michael O’Leary, RIP.

Recreational football: The Over-35/recreational team just missed out on a second piece of silverware in when they lost to hosts Truagh in their shield final recently. Well done to everyone who played their part; Dermot will be in touch if there are any more competitions in the coming weeks.

Aido file: Our Under-12s suffered a defeat at the hands of Castleblayney on Monday last. This was a disappointing result but consolation was taken from the fact we’ve already have a placed booked in the semi-final of the competition. On the same night however our Under-16s won their second game following big performances from the likes of Andrew Connolly, Mark Murphy, James and Remy McKenna, David Lowry and Paul Peppard. We host Truagh on Monday to try and keep our winning ways going! Players are asked to keep pushing the pool exhibition in our final fundraiser of the year!
