Monaghan V Mayo – All Ireland quarter-final 25/0/2012
Monaghan Ladies hopes of another all Ireland final spot is truly alive with a fine team display against Mayo on Saturday last in the Al Ireland Quarter final. Mayo piled on the pressure from the start but Aileen Gilroy’s shot for goal came back off the crossbar, she did however see her shot sail over the bar for the first score of the game. In the 5th Minute Nicola Fahey who made a good run up the field hand passed to C Mc Anespie and her in turn to player of the match Cathriona Mc Connell to put the first of her three goals firmly in the back of the Mayo net, the same player then added a point. Monaghan were defending well from the middle of the park back and with some good ball going forward Niamh Kindlon was fouled and she sent the resulting free over the bar. Both Monaghan through C Mc Connell and Mayo through Cora Staunton traded two points apiece and Deirdre Doherty put over another for Mayo bringing it back to a goal between the sides. Two great goal chances in the 20th Minute by Mayo’s Cora Staunton and Yvonne Byrne were saved brilliantly by Linda Martin. Amanda Casey put over another point with great work by Laura Mc Eneaney (who had a great playmakers role in the number 11 jersey) Both Monaghan and Mayo introduced subs Caoimhe Mohan and Carol Hegarty into the fray for the final 10 mins of the half. Niamh Kindlon who was in impressive free taking form sent over 3 frees from the spot while Sarah Rowe pointed to leave the half time score at Monaghan 1-8 to Mayo 0-5
Monaghan’s Niamh Kindlon put over a free on the start of the second half and Caoimhe Mohan followed this up with a point from play. A great ball into the inside Mayo forward line and ace shooter Cora Staunton took off with speed to finish it to the top of the Monaghan net, just Iimmediately after, though, Monaghan cancelled that out when C McConnell placed her second goal in the net, following good team work from the Monaghan forward line. Another goal this time form the Mayo midfielder Aileen Gilroy was sent in over Linda Martins head after a brilliant kick from out near the middle of the park. Cora Staunton then sent over another point for Mayo from out near the wing.
Both teams were attacking and defending aggressively for every ball which resulted in the Mayo midfielder and Captain Claire Egan been sent to the sin bin for 10 minutes. Amanda Casey then dropped back in to defend as the extra player making it impossible for the Mayo forwards to get any chance of goal. Niamh Kindlon put over another free, while Cora Staunton pointed from way out and her team mate Deirdre Doherty added another a minute later. Niamh Kindlon raised the white flag twice in succession (frees) and Cathriona Mc Connell finished her third to the net following a great run forward by Caoimhe Mohan. C Staunton once again sent over for Mayo while at the other end half back Aoife Mc Anespie pointed with a good solo run forward. Amanda Casey was in the right place to punch the ball into the net with a great delivery in from C Mohan. Mayo finished off the scoring for the day with points from Cora Staunton (3) and Deirdre Doherty (2), they also had three goal shots denied by Therese Mc Nally, Linda Martin and the post. It now leaves Monaghan into the semi-final meeting with All Ireland Champions Cork on Saturday 8th September
