Junior championship quarter-final (Replay )  2/08/2012

St Brigids  V Killanny

St Brigids were first to settle and score when full forward Jane Kerrr
put over a point from close range, there was great defending and
attacking from both sides but nothing materialised for a further 10
mins, then Killanny were awarded a penalty for a foot block and Aine
Kerr stepped up to plant the ball into the net, points followed from
St Brigids, Louise duffy, Jane Kerr and captain Rachel Mc Atavie. The
St Brigids goalie Jenny Mc Ardle did however pull of a fine save form
Killanny’s Aine Kerr. Shortly after St Brigids had landed two goals in
quick succession from Emma Mooney and Kellie Mc Cabe, Killanny now
were forced to make changes and they brought on some subs who
certainly seemed to settle the team, they (killanny) landed two goals
in the space of a few minutes from Siobhain Collins and Niamh Downey ,
as the clock down for the half time St Brigids scored goal no 3 from
Louise Duffy and the final score of the half came from Killanny’s
Joanne Conlon when she sent over a point – this left the half time
score at Killanny 3-1 St Brigids 3-4

Both teams recorded a wide a piece at the beginning of the second
half, until Killanny got the scoring under way with a goal from the
hardworking Lynn Gartlan, then a point followed from Aine Kerr. St
Brigids sub Vicky Fitzpatrick produced a great goal just minutes
later, but that was as good as it got for St Brigids in the second
half, Killanny gradually got stronger and stronger and outplayed St
Brigids totally from here on in with points from Aine Kerr (5 – 3 frs)
Claire Marron & Siobhain Collins a point a piece and another goal
from Aine Kerr – they now go on to meet Donaghmoyne B in the
semi-final

Senior Final Preview

Donaghmoyne  V  Truagh  –  Saturday August 11th @ 8.30 Venue TBC

This Saturday Donaghmoyne are going for their 10th championship final
in a row. Their opponents are Truagh who are making their first
appearance in the Senior final. Both sides have a number of county
players on their panel . However Donaghmoyne will be going into the
game as hot favourites. Last week Donaghmoyne overcame a brave
challenge from Emyvale in the semi final and Truagh had a comfortable
win over Monaghan Harps. Truagh won’t mind going into the game as
underdogs but Donaghmoyne’s experience at club level should prove too
much for the North Monaghan club. Truagh will be hoping their county
players, Caoimhe Mohan, Natasha Mohan, Eileen Mc Kenna and Rachel Mc
Kenna will be in top form, but likewise Donaghmoyne have the Courtney
sisters, Catriona Mc Connell, Amanda Casey, Linda Martin, Niamh Lynch,
Eileen Mc Elroy all who  have been in fine form. Both of these sides
have some very  good young players coming through so anyone going to
the game will see a wealth of talent on the field.  I expect
Donaghmoyne’s experience to be too much but underdogs can often cause
surprises. Unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to get the thoughts of
both captains as the date for final was brought forward. It was only
finalised on Monday night.

INTERMEDIATE FINAL

Aghabog  V  Magheracloone –  Friday August 10th @ 7.30pm  Venue Latton

This is a real interesting final with both sides meeting in last
year’s semi final. Aghabog came out on top on that occassion in what
was a very closely contested game. This year both these sides have
been progressing very nicely and this is one game which is too close
to call. Magheracloone have county stars
Niamh Kindlon, Christine Reilly and Ciara Mc Dermott in thier ranks
whilst Aghabog have Ellen Mc Carron, Laura Boylan and Anita Newell.
Niamh Kindlon has been in top form this year as has Ellen Mc Carron so
these two players will be ones to watch out for. Aisling Tierney
former county star has made a comeback to football this year and  her
performance against Inniskeen in the replay proved that she is in fine
form at present. Ciara Mc Guinness also a former county star is
playing really well for Magheracloone.  I spoke to Emma Freeman
Magheracloone’s captain during the week and asked her how she thought
the game would go. She referred to last year’s semi final when
Magheracloone lost out narrowly. This year Emma believes Magheracloone
are a very different side. She believes this is down to the excellent
preparation put in by the management team of Fiona Kindlon, Leo Marron
and Orla Mc Mahon. She believes they are well focused and that they
have matured greatly as a team. The county players, we all know and
are familar with their ability but it will be the younger players who
she feels have matured greatly that could influence the outcome of the
game. Edel Byrne’s younger sister Eva has been a relevation this year
as has been Aine Reilly. Ciara Mc Dermott last year’s Ulster Young
Player of the Year will be another key player and Leanne Maguire U16
county star last year will also be a player to watch out for. She
believes it will be a very tight game but she is hoping that all the
hard work put in by management and players alike will be enough to
bring the title up to the south of the county. . Magheracloone reached
the Ulster decider back in 2009 and Emma is  hoping to have another
shot at that Ulster title. A win against Aghabog would put them one
step further towards that goal. I also spoke to Aghabog’s joint
captain Brigin Tierney. She believes that Aghabog are also better prepared
than last year when they lost out to Monaghan Harps in the final. She
believes they have the work put in and are mentally better prepared. I
asked were there any young players we should be watching out for. She
was quick to point out that Aghabog work as a team with each player
having a key role to play. She stated that Aghabog have an extremely
young team with an average age of about 19. She expects the game to be
hard and physical with both teams fighting it out to the final
whistle. She believes the pace of both sets of forwards will be key in
the game and she is looking forward to an exciting game of football.
She finished off by saying “May the best team win”

Having talked to both captains it is obvious that this title means a
lot to both teams.  Both are well prepared and very much up for the
game.  I would predict that this game will be one of the games of the
championship and a game not to be missed.  I wouldn’t rule out a
draw.
