Seán McDermotts 3-12 Doohamlet 0-11 22/8/12
Seán McDermotts boosted their hopes of avoiding relegation in the IFL with a big win over Doohamlet on Wednesday evening. Doohamlet hadn’t lost in 15 matches in all competitions going into this one, but the manner of the defeat in Threemilehouse was particularly shocking, as they trailed all the way in a ten-point win for the hosts. James Treanor scored all three goals for Seán McDermotts, whose midfielder Páraic McGuirk had an inspirational game just days after returning from spending the summer in America, while Damien Larkin and Paddy Kieran also impressed. Mark Murphy, Colin Walshe and Ollie Hughes were best for Doohamlet, who were without regulars Shane McManus, Paul McArdle and Gabie Casey.
Seán McDermotts got off to a perfect start when James Treanor found the net for the opening score, before Damien Larkin added a point. A long kick in by Derek McMahon carried in the wind and bounced over the bar to continue the home side’s flying start, before Larkin converted a 25-metre free for a foul on Paddy Kieran. Ollie Hughes got Doohamlet off the mark on 12 minutes and Mark Murphy quickly added their second point.
Colin Walshe sent over a point after a one-two with Murphy and Ted Duffy landed a 30-metre free for a foul on Hughes, but a fine point by Treanor kept the Seáns on top. Páraic McGuirk added his name to the scoresheet before Larkin curled over a superb sideline kick. A great point from play by McGuirk sent the Seáns in at half-time leading by 1-7 to 0-4.
Having started the first half with a goal, the Seáns repeated the trick in the second half when a slip in the Doohamlet full-back line allowed a long ball to find Treanor, who coolly tucked the ball into the net. Points by Ollie Hughes and Mark Murphy (free) kept Doohamlet in touch, but McGuirk replied with another inspirational point for the Seáns. A point from play by Murphy and a 20-metre free by Ted Duffy, after a foul on Darren Connolly, closed the gap to six, but the Seáns all but sealed their win when Doohamlet keeper James Casey failed to hold on to a Larkin free which dropped short, allowing Treanor to toe-poke home and complete his hat-trick.
Murphy got a point back from a free, but Larkin and Kieran both split the posts to increase the Seáns’ lead even further. A brace of frees by Murphy helped Doohamlet move into double-figures, only for the Seáns to finish with a flourish, via well-taken points from play by Treanor and McGuirk. Seán McDermotts have three games left (two at home) to attempt to preserve their intermediate status, while Doohamlet are still well clear at the top of the table and safely in the semi-finals of both league and championship.
