U14FLD4 – Toome v Doohamlet/ 14/07/12. These two depleted teams, due to annual holidays, fulfilled their league fixture, in a sunny St Victor’s Park on Saturday afternoon last. When these clubs met in this competition, last May in Doohamlet, Toome came through after a titanic battle, with two points to spare. On this occasion, Toome won by a greater margin. After the first quarter, the home team led by 2-7 to 0-6 –  goals, courtesy of Andrew Connolly and Charlie McDonnell, and points from James Wilson (0-2), Andrew Connolly (0-2), Kevin McCooey (0-2), and Charlie McDonnell (0-1). These goals left a hard working Doohamlet outfit, with a mountain to climb. In the second period, James Wilson gave a virtuoso performance, scoring 1-3 to the visitors 0-3, to end the first half on a score line of Toome 3-11 to 0.9 for Doohamlet. In the third quarter, James contributed another 1-3, together with points from Kevin McCooey (0-2), and Andrew Connolly. In the final quarter, goals from Stephen Blessing (2-0) and Eoin Gorman (1-0) and points from Frank Connolly and Patrick McMahon to Doohamlet’s 0-, 4 finished off the match. The number 1 jersey was given to usual full back, John Gorman, and he gave an exhibition in the art of modern goalkeeping –his anticipation was brilliant, and his double save in the last quarter was exemplary. Mark Byrne was most effective, and his interceptions were particularly timely. Kevin Tibby was at his energetic best and extremely hard working. Stephen Blessing’s goals were expertly taken, and his covering was excellent. Kevin McCooey played his usual methodical game and engineered his points particularly well. Frank Connolly effectively covered the complete middle third and worked his socks off. James Wilson was playmaker in chief – he was top scorer with a magnificent 2-9 – he rifled an unstoppable ball  into the top corner of the net for his second goal. Eoin Gorman was continually making himself available, and his goal at the end was the result of his continuous grafting. Patrick McMahon roamed to marvelous effect, linked well and laid on some clever passes. Andrew Connolly executed four terrific scores and was a continuous thorn in side of the defense. Charlie McDonnell uses his height and long strides to brilliant effect and invariable wins the 50/50 situations. Apart from his two scores, his overall contribution was considerable. It was a pleasure to see young Padraig Donaghy appear in a Toome jersey –he represents the third generation of the Annalitten Donaghy’s, to play for the St Victor’s club. We wish him well. Team – John Gorman, Mark Byrne, Kevin Tibby, Stephen Blessing, (2-0), Kevin McCooey, (0-4), Frank Connolly, (0-1), James Wilson, (2-9), Eoin Gorman, (1-0), Patrick McMahon, (0-1), Andrew Connolly, (1-3), and Charlie McDonnell, (1-1). This match was in the capable hands of referee Ciaran Mulligan, (Aghabog).

Congratulations to Toome’s GAA underage golfers: Charlie McDonnell and Sean McMahon, who represented Concra Wood, in the Northern Standard  Boys  under 18 Golf Championship  held at Rossmore Golf Club recently. Charlie came third in the honours list, and Sean acquitted himself with distinction.
