Sunday’s double-header at Clontibret in the Gormley uPVC Senior Football Championship produced wins for Ballybay and Currin.

Ballybay saw off Carrickmacross in their preliminary-round replay in the first match. Three points by Christopher McGuinness had Ballybay ahead by 0-6 to 0-4 at half-time and although Carrick started the second half with three unanswered points from Eoin Sherry, Shane McQuillan scored the only goal of the match on 41 minutes to lead Ballybay to a 1-10 to 0-9 victory.

Currin marked their long-awaited entry to the SFC race with a stunning 2-12 to 1-10 defeat of last year’s runners-up Scotstown in the first round. Scotstown led by 1-3 to 0-1 early on, helped by an Orin Heaphey goal, but a superb strike by Jack McCarron, who returned from a long-term injury, helped Currin to draw level by half-time (1-6 apiece). Philip O’Callaghan added a second major just after the restart and Currin never looked back, with McCarron, O’Callaghan and Stephen Smyth hitting a combined 2-11 to lead them through.
