Seniors: The senior footballers had two games in quick succession last week. First up was a narrow defeat away to Latton last Wednesday evening. The lads got off to a perfect start with an early goal by Dean Fanning and a point by Liam Hahessy, but the scores dried up after that, with a point from play by Dean and a free by Liam being our only other efforts on target in the first half. That allowed Latton to get back into the game and they found the net right before half-time to take a 1-4 to 1-3 lead. A series of missed chances, including a penalty, kept us from taking the lead, despite a brace of points from Liam. A point from play by Conor Galligan and a free by Nicholas Treanor had our lads level with time running out, but Latton hit the last two points to steal a 1-9 to 1-7 win.
Team and scorers: Conall McKenna; David Hughes, Stephen Driver, Niall Hahessy; Gareth Treanor, Aodhán Óg McAnespie, Conor Galligan (0-1); Peter Coyle, Neil McAdam (Capt.); Paul Rushe, Nicholas Treanor (0-1f), Nicholas Scott; Liam Hahessy (0-4, 2f), Emmett McArdle, Dean Fanning (1-1).
Subs: Johnny Sherry for Coyle (inj., 51 mins), Paddy Connolly for N Treanor (53), David Loughran for McArdle (56), Paul Kelly for Rushe (58).
The seniors returned to winning ways away to Currin last Friday. The teams swapped points three times in the opening ten minutes. Liam Hahessy and Dean Fanning (two) were on target in an evenly-matched opening, before frees by Liam and Nicholas Treanor and Dean’s third point gave our lads the advantage. Dean added another before the first half was over and he also set up David Hughes to score the only goal and make the half-time score 1-7 to 0-4. Our lads took a while to get going in the second half, but points by Conor Galligan and Dean kept us out in front and David Loughran and Liam added a point each to secure a hard-earned 1-11 to 0-9 victory.
Team and scorers: Conall McKenna; Niall Hahessy, Stephen Driver, Gareth Treanor; Aodhán Óg McAnespie, Conor Galligan (0-1), Paul Rushe; Peter Coyle, Neil McAdam (Capt.); Nicholas Scott, Nicholas Treanor (0-1f), Paddy Connolly; Liam Hahessy (0-3, 2f), David Hughes (1-0), Dean Fanning (0-5).
Sub: David Loughran (0-1) for Rushe (inj., 48).
Next up for the seniors is a league game at home to Ballybay on Sunday week (August 12), followed five days later by a championship match against the same opposition in Clontibret.
O-35: The Over-35s/recreational team had their first competition of the year last Saturday in the Ned Boylan Cup and have qualified for the shield final this Saturday (August 4) at 5.30pm in Scotstown. While missing many stalwarts, we had impressive maiden performances from Kenny Gorman and Darren Doyle. Training is this Thursday at 8pm in Gavan Duffy Park and all are welcome. Support for shield final is also welcome and will be a great day for all the family.
Minors: The minor footballers are preparing for a big month, with the championship set to start on August 14 away to Killanny and the league semi-finals also coming up.
U-16: The Under-16 footballers secured their semi-final place when they beat Doohamlet last Friday. The lads are due to travel to Scotstown for the semi-final on August 16.
U-12: Both of our Under-12 football teams will compete in the shield competitions on Saturday, August 18, with the Division One team up against Truagh and the Division Five lads facing Carrickmacross.
Good luck: To Colin, Mattie, Michael, Fearghal, Kevin and the Monaghan minor footballers, who take on Dublin in the All-Ireland MFC quarter-finals this Sunday. Throw-in at Páirc Esler in Newry is at 5.30pm.
