Gloria Corrigan Tournament
Glorious sunshine and a wonderful day’s football were all to be seen last
Saturday in Emyvale for the Annual Gloria Corrigan Tournament. 16 teams
took part each divided into 4 groups of 4. In group 1 there was
Donaghmoyne,Killanny,Doohamlet and Seans. In group 2 there was Emyvale A,
Eire Og, Aughnamullen and St Brides. Group 3 was Cup holder’s St
Laurence’s, Truagh, Magheracloone and Graigecullen and in group 4 there was
Monaghan Harps, Tyholland, Corduff and Emyvale B. After the group stages
were completed, the 2 top teams in each group progressed into the Cup
competition and the bottom 2 teams went into the shield. In group 1
Donaghmoyne finished top of the group winning all of their 3 games.
Killanny finished 2nd, with Doohamlet and Seans finishing 3rd and 4th
respectively. In group 2, Emyvale A like Donaghmoyne finished top
winning all of their games. This was a much tighter group for the
remaining 3 teams with all 3 on equal points when the games were
completed. This meant it was down to scoring difference which left St
Brides finsishing 2nd, and Eire Og and Aughnamullen 3rd and 4th. Group
3 saw new comers Graigecullen from Carlow finishing top, St Laurence’s
from Kildare 2nd and Mageracloone and Truagh 3rd and 4th. Scoring
difference came into play again in Group 4, with Tyholland and Corduff
finishing on the same points for the top 2 positions and Monaghan
Harps and Emyvale B on equal points in 3rd and 4th positions. When the
scoring difference came into play, Tyholland finished top followed by
Corduff, with Emyvale B 3rd and Monaghan Harps 4th.
It was now down to the quarter finals. In the Cup competition,
Donaghmoyne beat St Brides, Emyvale A beat Killanny. Graigecullen beat
Corduff and St Laurence’s beat Tyholland. In the Shield quarter
finals, Aughnamullen beat Doohamlet, Seans beat Eire Og, Monaghan
Harps beat Magheracloone and Truagh beat Emyvale B. It was now down to
the semi final stages and once again all 8 teams involved played some
excellent football. In the cup semi finals, Emyvale A overcame
Donaghmoyne in what was a very closely contested contest and in the
other semi final, St Laurences overcame Graigecullen, a turn around of
the result in the group stages. In the shield semi finals,
Aughnamullen beat Seans and Monaghan Harps beat sheild holders
Magheracloone.
The stages were now set for the finals, and once again the crowd
weren’t let down by the quality of football served up in both games.
The shield final was first to get underway. Monaghan Harps and
Aughnamullen both played some fast and exciting football with
excellent defending by both teams. In the end Monaghan Harps came out
on top with some fine point scoring.
In the cup final, holders St Laurence’s came up against host club
Emyvale, and like the sheild final there was very little between the
sides. St Laurences got off the better start with Ciara Whelar
excelllent for the Kildare side. There was only 2 scores between the
sides at the break. St Laurences pushed ahead at the start of the
second but a strong comeback from the home side left the final few
minutes very exciting. In the end St Laurence’s held out to once again
retain the Cup, their 3rd in a row.
Ciara Whelar won the Overall Player of the Tournament award for her
excellent displays all day.
Once again this tournament showed what is good about ladies football.
The late Gloria Corrigan was heavily involved in football within the
Emyvale club having coached the Underage teams with many of the
players she coached, now making headlines for their performances at
Senior county level. The talent at U14 level was obvious to see last
Saturday and the interest in this tournament is increasing every year.
This is a fitting tribute to Gloria. A big thank you to all the clubs
who took part and to everyone from the Emyvale club who made the
tournament the success it was. To the 5 referees who officiated on the
day, well done.
MAGHERACLOONE ADVANCE TO THE INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL
Magheracloone 2-14 Scotstown 0-4
Magheracloone advanced to the Intermediate final with a comfortable
win over Scotstown. Scotstown went into this game missing quite a
number of regulars and they found the going tough against a very
impressive Magheracloone side who seem to be improving as the year has
gone on.The game was all but over at half time with Magheracloone
leading by 1-11 to 0-2, but in fairness to Scotstown they came back
out in the second half and gave it all right to the very end . However
on the night, Magheracloone deserved their win and they will now meet
either Aghabog or Inniskeen in the final.

SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP KICKS OFF
This weekend sees the start of the senior club championship with both
semi finals down for decision.
MONAGHAN HARPS V TRUAGH – Sunday 29th July @ 3.30pm
The first of the semi finals takes place this Sunday, when Monaghan
Harps, last years Intermediate winners taking on Truagh. Monaghan
Harps have suffered the loss of a number of players this year but have
a number of young players coming through their ranks. Truagh have been
making great strides at senior level over the past few years, with 4
of their panel currently on the county team. They will go into
Sunday’s game as hot favourites to make it through to their first ever
Senior county final. Venue for Sunday’s game is Rooskey.
DONAGHMOYNE V EMYVALE – Monday 30th July @ 7.30pm
Next Monday evening sees Donaghmoyne go for their 10th senior
championship in a row. Their opponents are Emyvale who are going for
their first Senior title. Based on the result of last year’s final
when the two sides met, Emyvale didn’t do themselves justice and they
will have to step up to the mark and play to their full potential if
they are to overcome this excellent Donaghmoyne side. Venue for this
game is Donaghmoyne
