SENIOR ULSTER FINAL

Monaghan’s opponents in the Senior Ulster final will be Donegal. In a surprise result last weekend, Donegal beat Tryone. Donegal put up a fantastic performance and Monaghan will know going into the game that they will be no push over. Last time Monaghan beat them in the league, they beat them well, but Donegal were without the services of Geraldine Mc Loughlin who was outstanding last weekend. The girls are training away in preparation for the  big game. The Ulster final will place on Sunday 15th July. More details next week.

U16S LOSE IN OPENING GAME AGAINST DONEGAL

Donegal  4-13  Monaghan 1-7

Last Tuesday evening in Aghabog our U16s  didn’t get off to the start they wanted, when they were beaten by a very strong and impressive Donegal side.   It was Donegal who fired over the first point before Leanne Maguire converted a free to pull one back for Monaghan. Another point from Monaghan put Monaghan in front. However Donegal took control and were it not for  the excellent goalkeeping skills of Eilish Clear, they would have been further behind in the opening minutes. Donegal then hit the net twice and 3  further points put Donegal in a commanding lead 2-4  to 0-2. Another point from a free from Leanne Maguire narrowed the gap and Monaghan seemed to gain a bit of momentum. They had a number of scoring opportunities when they seemed to go for goals, when points might have been the wiser option. Donegal finished the half with 3 more points to leave them going into the break with a 10 point lead. Half time score Donegal 2-7  Monaghan 0-3

Donegal came out in the second half just as strong and determined as the first and they notched up 3 more points in the opening 5 minutes. Another goal soon followed to put them 3-13 to 0-3 up . Shauna Mohan fired over Monaghan’s first point of the half and then Leanne Magurire who was moved in to full forward fired to the net. Monaghan were now starting to play a bit more like what they are capable of, but with Donegal in  such a commanding lead, it was just too big a mountain to climb.    Monaghan did add 3 more points to their total but then Donegal ended the scoring of the game with another goal, to leave the final score.

Donegal 4-13  Monaghan 1-7

This was a disappointing result for the Monaghan girls. They have been training away over the past number of weeks and have had a number of good challenge games under their belt. They started the game without the influential Emer O Rourke and things just didn’t go right for them on the day. Donegal were a very strong side, but I know the Monaghan girls will pick up from this defeat. The have the talent to do  so and hopefully if they can pick up a win this Saturday against Armagh, they will have put themselves right back into contention again. The venue for Saturdays game is Crossmaglen. Throw in 3pm. We wish them the very best of luck.

Junior championship quarter-final

Donaghmoyne B           V       Latton

These two teams met in the junior championship semi-final in 2011 with Latton been the victors then, but this year things were very much improved for Donghamoyne. These young players having a year of senior football under their belt showed the difference between the teams. Niamh Callan started of the scoring for Donaghmoyne with a point in the second minute of play, Fiona Lafferty followed this up with another some minutes later, them Latton got on the scoreboard with a point from Shauna Coyle and another from Lavina Connolly. The first of Donaghmoyne majors came next when a great pass from Edel Keenan who picked out Gina Mc Gowan and she calmly sent it into the corner of the net, from the kick out the ball was won high in the air by Gina again and with the goalie not just back into the square the ball was lopped just over her head and rolled into the empty net, this was a major blow for Latton and a great lift for Donaghmoyne.  Latton introduced Lisa Lennon into the fray to get some scores but it was next Edel Keenan who pointed from a free for Donaghmoyne. Now it was lattons turn and Joanne Culleton scored their only goal when she blasted from the corner through several defenders to end up in the Donaghmoyne net. For the remainder of the half it was all Donaghmoyne, with 2-2 from Majella Woods  and a goal from Karen Hall, and just before the half time whistle Shauna Coyle put over another point for Latton to leave the half time score at 5-5 to 1-3.

Latton had a mountain to climb in the second half, but it was once again Donaghmoyne who started the scoring with a point from Majella Woods (who was causing all sorts of problems for the latton defence), Majella was then fouled and Gina Mc Gowan pointed this free. Karen hall goaled again when the Latton goalie failed to get rid of the ball and it then fell into the outstretched hands of Karen and she made no mistake by planting it firmly in the net. Donaghmoyne began to use up some of their subs now when they put on Theresa Comiskey, Aoife Keenan and Niamh Markey. Niamh been only on the field less than three minutes pointed. Some good defending by both sides kept the scores at a minimum in the second half  and both side introduced some more subs with Mary Mc Elroy & Roisin Finnegan coming on for Donaghmoyne and Pamela Fitzpatrick, Lisa Dempsey and Megan Conlon on for Latton. A point followed from Lattons Amelia Elliot, then a free from the boot of Majella Woods and a point also, while Lattons Lisa Lennon and Diane Dempsey scored a point a piece to leave the fulltime score at Donaghmoyne 6-9 to Latton 1-6

Abbey Fanning Memorial 7 A Side Tournament

Sponsored by the Squealing Pig Bar

Hosted by Monaghan Harps Ladies on Saturday 30th of June 2012

With 8 teams entered in this year’s tournament, both the shield and cup competition were wide open for all concerned to potentially take home some silverware.  Aghabog, Truagh, Knockbride (Cavan) and Magheracloone formed Group 1 and Emyvale, Donaghmoyne A, Monaghan Harps and Donaghmoyne B formed Group 2.

Following the round robin games Aghabog, Truagh, Donaghmoyne A & Emyvale had qualified for the cup competition.  Leaving Knockbride, Magheracloone, Monaghan Harps & Donaghmoyne B competing for the shield title.

In the semi finals of the cup, Emyvale defeated Truagh and Donaghmoyne defeated Aghabog leaving Emyvale pitted against old adversaries Donaghmoyne in the Cup final.

The shield semi finals saw the hosts Monaghan Harps defeat the Knockbride team, holders of the title from 2011.  Magheracloone saw off Donaghmoyne’s second team to claim their place in the shield final against Monaghan Harps.

The shield final was played at a fast pace in difficult conditions.  Both teams showed some wonderful pieces of skill throughout but no team dominated the play at any stage and at the final whistle Magheracloone had taken the title by defeating Monaghan Harps by a single point.

In the cup final, a hot and heavy affair ensued, with both Emyvale and Donaghmoyne anxious to create enough of a lead to then take the game home.  The sun eventually shone down, as both teams fought hard to pull away but in the end it was also to be a close encounter with nothing between the teams.  In the end, a jubilant Emyvale were in front at the final whistle and that’s when it counts and Emyvale have now put their name on the cup for a second time in 3 years.

Each referee selected a player of the match for each game played on the day.  The player with the highest number of votes received the cup and shield players of the tournament.  Muireann O’Rourke of Monaghan Harps won the Shield Player of the Tournament and Grainne McNally of Emyvale won the Cup Player of the Tournament.

So another successful year for the Monaghan Harps Ladies Annual Abbey Fanning Memorial 7 a Side Tournament sponsored by the Squealing Pig. A big thank you to everyone involved in the hosting of this prestigious competition which all of the Monaghan Harps Ladies have great pride and honour in hosting, in memory of Abbey, our team mate who is gone but not forgotten.
