The 2012 GAA Handball One Wall Nationals has reached a conclusion following a vast array of top class matches with a series of enthralling finals throughout Sunday.
The Ladies Open title has gone to county Down for the second time in three years following a hugely impressive display from Saval’s Lorraine Havern. Havern has become well know as a ONe Wall specialist, although adds this title to the Ladies 23 & Under four wall 40×20 title she won earlier this year.
Havern, defeated Fiona Shannon (Antrim) in the title decider by 15-2, 15-0, having also denied Sibeal Gallagher (Antrim) in the semi final by 31-4. Shannon had previously overcome Marianna Rushe (Roscommon) by 23-21 in their semi final meeting.
The Mens Open final saw Westmeath’s Robbie McCarthy secure the honours following a thrilling final win over Clare’s Diarmuid Nash by 15-9, 12-15, 11-9. Nash made a sterling comeback in that encounter and lead by 8-1 at a stage before McCarthy kicked into overdrive to deliver 10 aces and win the crown for a second time.
A total of 11 places were filled on Team Ireland following the One Wall Nationals, with tht completing Team Ireland for the 2012 Championships in October.
There is no doubt this was a hugely successful and ground-breaking event for GAA Handball Ireland, with over 2,000 handball enthusiasts enjoying the fantastic surroundings in the purpose built 12 court arena at Citywest. The next occasion the handball world will converge on the Citywest International Events Arena will be from 11th-21st October as 33 countries and over 2,000 competitors will contest an array of world Championship grades. The taste has been given for what to expect and now the build-up really begins to that event.
