On a wet and windy Tuesday evening, local rivals Carrickmacross Emmets and Corduff Gaels battled
it out for a place in the Under 14 Division 2 Final. Carrickmacross had reached the semi-final by virtue
of a bye in the quarter finals, while Corduff were 7 point winners over Sean McDermotts. These two
sides only met each other on Saturday last in the league, with Corduff earning a 5 point victory.
Carrick opened the scoring after only 2 minutes when midfielder Oisin Marron pointed from a free,
after he was fouled himself. Corduff didn’t take long to respond however with Killian Hand opening
up their tally with a well-taken point. This sparked a flurry of scores from Corduff, which totalled
eight in the first quarter. Sean McEnaney edged Corduff ahead, before Hand got another from a free.
The impressive Fergal Hanratty got his first score of the game with a long range effort, and Dylan
McEnaney extended Corduff’s lead to 4 with 10 minutes gone. Sean Burns, Fionnan Cassidy and the
aforementioned Hand also pointed. The first real goal chance fell to Corduff with Ronan Connolly
finding himself in the right place at the right time, but his effort was well saved by the feet of Carrick
net minder Breffni Henry. Ryan O’Connor had the last say in the first quarter when he pointed to
leave the scoreline at Carrick 0-02 0-08 Corduff
Carrick began the second quarter quickest again when Ryan O’Connor pointed after a flowing move.
Corduff responded in no better way than to score the first goal of the match. Denis Ward found
himself in the right place to slot past the ‘keeper in the bottom corner after the ball had come back
off the post. Hand and Hanratty added further scores to leave 10 between the teams. Carrick got a
glimmer of hope some 5 minutes into the second quarter when Matty Conlon’s long ball was flicked
to the net by the inrushing Oran Kieran. Hanratty pointed again from a ‘45 before Denis Ward pointed
from a free. Ryan O’Connor and Fergal Hanratty exchanged points just before the half-time whistle to
leave the scores at Carrick 1-04 1-13 Corduff
Carrick again opened up the scoring in the third quarter when Aaron Kearney pointed from a free
before Killian Hand responded for Corduff. Carrick had a spring in their step at this stage when
they reeled off 5 points in a row with O’Connor (2), Patrick Bermingham, Oisin Marron and Cathal
McEneaney all adding their names to the score sheet. Corduff netted for the second time, when
Eugene Russell poked home after a goalmouth scramble. Fergal Hanratty added two more points
before O’Connor and Kearney pointed to leave the scores at the end of the third quarter, Carrick 1-12
Corduff 2-17
Corduff got the first score of the final quarter with a flowing move down the right involving Eugene
Russell, Fionnan Cassidy and Fergal Hanratty with Hanratty’s shot being well saved by Henry in the
Carrick goal, but Killian Hand was there to fire home the rebound. Cathal McEneaney, Ryan O’Connor
and Rowan McMahon all pointed for Carrick before Eugene Russell netted again for Corduff. Fionnan
Cassidy pointed again for Corduff before talismanic defender Peter Clinton got his name on the score
sheet after a surging run. Dean McMahon finished off the scoring with a well-taken goal. Final Score:
Carrick 1-15 5-19 Corduff
Corduff will now look forward to the Championship Final, next Tuesday evening where they will face
