Seniors: The senior footballers fell to a 0-11 to 1-6 defeat at home to Clontibret in the league last Wednesday. Clontibret were first off the mark with a brace of frees by Conor McManus, but Donal Hahessy, Liam Hahessy and Nicholas Scott had our lads a point up by midway through the half. Clontibret hit the next three points to lead by two, but a free by Donal closed our deficit to one at half-time: 0-5 to 0-6. Our lads made a perfect start to the second half when Liam scored the game’s only goal and Donal added a well-taken point from play, but we lost our way, allowing Clontibret to come back and win by two points.

U-14: The Under-14 Division One team came from seven points down inside the final quarter to salvage a draw away to Clontibret in a thrilling game last Saturday. Poor finishing let our lads down in the opening quarter, although a goal by Conor Duffy and points from Jack Deery and Ben Flynn kept them in touch at 2-2 to 1-2 down. Despite scoring a goal by Ethan Murphy and a point from Paul Peppard, our lads trailed by 2-7 to 2-3 at half-time, but goals by Remy McKenna and Ethan and points by Cathal Power, Michael Mulligan and Jack Deery (two) levelled it at 4-7 to 2-13 going into the last quarter. Clontibret pulled away once more, but Cathal found the net to keep the Harps in the game, while Conor Duffy and Jack added points. Our lads were still a goal down with time running out, but Cathal punched to the net to level it at Harps 6-9 Clontibret 3-18. See www.monaghangaa.ie for a full report on this match, which was chosen as the first ‘Juvenile Game of the Week’.

The Division Five team exited the championship, but only after a battling performance at home to a strong Aghabog team last Tuesday. A goal by Michael Mulligan had our lads level at 0-3 to 1-0 by the end of the first quarter and points by Aaron Coyle and Michael kept them in it at 1-2 to 0-7 at half-time. The damage was done in the third quarter when Aghabog pulled away to lead by 2-12 to 1-2, but the Harps didn’t drop the heads, with points by Jordan Clerkin (two) and Aaron Coyle in the final quarter.

Hurling: The senior hurlers are at home to Clontibret in the league tonight (Thursday) and they travel to Inniskeen for the first game of the championship, which is being played using a group system this year, next Tuesday.

Handball: Our handballers had a brilliant weekend away in Galway and Roscommon. In Williamstown, Co Galway, Eoghan McGinnity won the prestigious One-Wall competition when he defeated all entrants in the Under-11 grade. Eoghan’s sister Louise also competed at the same grade in the girls event. We heartily congratulate Eoghan and his family on a fine success in a national tournament. Eoghan intends to enter many more tournaments including Féile and of course the World Handball Championships in Citywest, Dublin in October. An unbelievable weekend continued at Curraghboy in Co Roscommon when Monaghan Town won the gold medal at the Community Games National Finals. The Under-13 team had a tough semi-final win over Tipperary and an even tougher win over a strong Roscommon team in the final. Well done to Cailean, Justas, Jakub and Konrad. A proud achievement for our club players!

Good luck: To our young members starting Leaving and Junior Cert exams on Wednesday. Go n-éirí an t-ádh libh!

Clubhouse: If you are thinking of having a party or a family get-together, the Monaghan Harps clubhouse at Gavan Duffy Park, Rooskey is the place. Contact Liadhan at 086 7837204 for bookings.
