ROCKCORRY G.A.A.

CLUB NOTES

22nd May 2012

Diamond Jubilee Celebrations

Sixty years ago Canon Gerard Ferguson was ordained to the priesthood. To commemorate and celebrate his Diamond Jubilee a special Thanksgiving Mass will take place in St. Mary’s Corravacan on Friday 22nd June at 7.00pm. Mass will be followed by a presentation night in St. Mary’s Hall, Rockcorry. The celebrations of his Diamond Jubilee will obviously centre on the ordination of Canon Gerard Ferguson and will naturally give people a chance to look back at the past and recall stories about different events. There is literally an ocean of stories that come to mind, on which I could speak, but since arriving in the Parish his work has been selfless and we have been blessed to have a person leading and serving our community. He is an extraordinary man, generous, humble and always ready to listen, to understand and to sympathise. He has indelibly made his mark and touched the lives of so many people, not only within our Parish, but loads of other places. In the years I have known him he has been very helpful and has been there in good times and bad and has always provided strength to families with his healing touch of prayer and kind words. His kindness as a priest has been obvious and we are grateful for his devoted service to the Parish and the organising committee invites family, friends and parishioners to join us on Friday 22nd June to mark and celebrate this wonderful occasion. The organising committee, chaired by Donal Guckian, will be circulating tickets for this function over the coming weeks and they hope all families within the parish will support and make a contribution.

Under 10 Go Games Blitz

As part of the Monaghan Coaching & Games Development we held an under 10 Go Games blitz last Saturday 19th May and Pairc Naomh Mhuire was certainly a hive of activity. Teams from Aughnamullen, Clones, Currin, Drumhowan, Tyholland and Rockcorry took part on the day and it was a great day. There was a remarkable turnout and all the kids showed plenty of spirit and loads of enthusiasm as they played three games during the two hours. They definitely provided plenty of entertainment for the spectators and they all enjoyed the occasion and well done to all the kids involved. It was a huge success and great credit is due to everyone involved for organizing the event and many thanks to everyone who travelled to support the kids on the day. Well done.

Under 8 Go Games Blitz

This Saturday 26th May we will be hosting an under 8 Go Games blitz between 10am to 12 noon. Visiting clubs will be Agahbog, Drumhowan and Tyholland.

Under 12 Competitive League

Our under 12 team are back in action in the competitive summer league with an away game against Castleblayney B this Saturday 26th May at 12 noon. We have been place in division 5, nine-a-side and will play Aghabog, Carrickmacross B, Castleblayney B, Killeevan and Monaghan Harps B.

Under 14 Team

Our under 14 team played Truagh at Pairc Naomh Mhuire on Saturday 19th May.  Our lads performed very strongly during the first quarter and held their own against a strong Truagh side and after the first fifteen minutes we led by 2-3 to 1-3. However, a very determined Truagh side took the game by the scruff of the neck and turned the game around as they totally dominated the second quarter scoring 4-2 with reply to take a 2-3 to 5-6 lead at the half way stage. After a strong pep talk the lads showed much improvement and put in a fantastic performance during the third quarter and edged out Truagh by 1-5 to 2-1 to leave the score at 3-8 to 7-7 going into the final period. During the last quarter both teams put some excellent moves together and it was fairly even but towards the end of the game Truagh slotted home a couple of goals to leave the final score Rockcorry 5-12 Truagh 10-15. There were many positives in this performance and had we taken all the chances on offer during the course of the game we could have been on closer terms.  Team manager Felix Granaghan had the bare minimum of players to choose from but all those present gave a good account of themselves against a good Truagh outfit. The next game for the under 14 team is on Saturday 2nd June when they travel to play Carrickmacross B team at 12 noon. Keep up the good work lads. Team: Ryan Lynch, Mark Duffy, Damien West, Gareth Smith, Vincent O’Brien, Patrick James, Pauric O’Brien, Kyle Brannigan, Gavin West and Caolán McPhillips.

Under 16 Team

It was a busy week for our under 16 team who experienced mixed fortunes because last Thursday evening they played Oram and the lads showed plenty of grit and determination and after a hard fought game they came away with the spoils on a score-line Oram 5-4 Rock Emmets 3-11. However, last Monday evening they played host to Corduff and while they enjoyed a slender one point advantage at the interval, leading 0-5 to 1-1, it all went seriously wrong during the second half as Corduff came out of the blocks the fastest and totally outplayed our lads to secure the victory on a score-line Rock-Emmets 1-9 Corduff 9-4.

Tonight, Thursday 24th May, the under 16 team travel to play Eire Og at 7.00pm.

GRM Minor Football League

Our minor team, Rock-Sarfields, played Emyvale on Tuesday 15th May and while the first half was evenly contested Emyvale proved too strong in the second period and were always in control and had plenty to spare by the final whistle. The final score Rock Sarsfields 3-6 Emyvale 7-14. Football will now take a back seat as players get ready to sit their exams so the next game for the minor team is on Tuesday 26th June when they are scheduled to play Latton.

Exams

Good luck to all players and members that are currently studying hard for exams at this time. I hope you get the questions you are hoping for and get the opportunities you deserve for all your hard work.

Monaghan Electrical Intermediate League Fixtures

Our senior team will be back in action on Friday 1st June when they travel to play Donaghmoyne at 8.00pm. On Sunday 10th June they are on the road again when they travel to play Doohamlet at 12 noon.

Reserve Football League

Unfortunately, due to injuries and a number of players doing exams last Wednesday night (16th May) we were not able to field a team against Truagh. Playing Gaelic football is much more than just winning, as they say it’s the “taking parts that counts”. Don’t get me wrong, I hate losing, but I fully appreciate the pressure placed on players today to leave work or college early for a mid-week game is unfair and this has to be seriously looked at next year! However, our focus for the three remaining league games must be to ensure we field a team in ALL games. I would appeal to all players both senior and reserve to make an extra effort to attend training every Tuesday and Friday nights at 7.30pm. Let’s show our true Rock character and spirit and not just roll-over! See you at training lads.

USFC Monaghan v Antrim

Best wishes to the Monaghan senior team who take on Antrim this Sunday in the Ulster Football Championship. Throw-in time at St. Tiernach’s Park is 3.30pm.

UMFC Monaghan c Antrim

Best wishes to Fergal McGeough, Lorcan Smyth and the entire Monaghan minor team as they take on Antrim this Sunday in the Ulster Minor Football Championship at 1.45pm. Hopefully a good crowd will travel to St. Tiernach’s Park, Clones to shout the team on.

Under 8’s & 10’s

Just a reminder that coaching for all the under 8 players continues every Saturday mornings between 10.00–11.00am. Under 10’s training continues every Monday evening between 6.20–7.30pm and on Saturday mornings at 10.00am. We would encourage parent participation and all players are welcome to attend these coaching sessions.
