Seniors – The seniors paid the price for a poor start last Saturday evening as they lost to Ballybay 1-11 to 0-11. Having opted to play with the strong breeze in the first half it would have been expected that Blayney would have had the best of the early running but a Ballybay free followed by a goal within the opening 2 minutes put paid to thatBlayney were struggling to come to grips with the game and further scores from Ballybay, one from play and two frees increased the lead to seven by the 12th minute. A Ciaran Hanratty free steadied the ship and when Gerry Brady and Hanratty again pointed, this time from play, Blayney were finally in the game. Blayney began to dominate around the middle but have to wait 10 minutes for their next score another Hanratty free. Two excellent points from play from Hanratty and Dermot Malone reduced the margin to the minimum entering injury time, a late late free for Ballybay then left the half-time score Ballybay 1-05 Faughs 0-06.
Padraig McBennett replaced Damian Hughes at the interval and a free from McBennett followed by another from Hanratty saw Blayney level within two minutes of the resumption but a brace of points restored Ballybays two point advantage. McBennett then slotted another long range free and Niall Duffy from play tied things up again with 15 minutes to play. The games defining moment then came as after an altercation the referee chose to red card Blayneys Francis Moore but only book the Ballybay man. The teams exchanges points again around the 50th minute but with Blayney tiring Ballybay finished the stronger and three points over the closing five minutes sealed their win. there is no rest for the seniors with 2 more games down for decision this week. We played Clontibret last night (Wednesday) and we are home to Magheracloone on Saturday evening at 5PM.
Junior B – The Bs recorded a useful 2-09 to 2-05 win over Magheracloone last Wednesday despite being short a few regulars. Pauric Greene got the first two points of the game and a Padraig McBennett free increased the lead to three. Goals from Gerry Brady and Fergal Duffy put Blayney in a great position but a Magheracloone goal late in the half gave them renewed hope . When they recorded three of the opening four scores in the 2nd half it looked as though a comeback may be on. Blayney however raised their game and five unanswered points over a ten minute period from McBennett (2), Brady, Moore and Finnegan gave Blayney the decisive lead they needed and despite a late scoring flurry from Magheracloone, probably due to some tired limbs on the Blayney side!! Blayney held on to win by four.
