Handball:

Ulster Championships.  Eamon Todd and Christopher Mc Kenna played their Ulster Junior B Singles semi-final last Wednesday night. In taking the first game in some speed Christopher won it 21-9, but Eamon composed him self and stamped his authority on the second winning it 21-14. And so going into the 3rd and final game it was all to play for, Christopher ran into an early lead 8-2 but Eamon got back into serve several times and began to claw back only to turn on his ankle at 10-6 down, Eamon didn’t play his best from there on and missed some uncharacteristic shots and so Christopher closed out the game and match 21-7, well done Christopher and good luck in the final, its on the 18th of February at 2pm but venue TBC.

Then on Friday evening after the dust had settled the boys team up together in the doubles (also Junior “B”) against Marcus Sheridan & Shane Briody from Cavan. This turned out to be a straight forward enough affair as they won the match 2-0 on a score line of 21-17, 21-14 well done boys, the final is on February the 25th also 2pm venue TBC.

Ulster U21 Doubles. Well done to Christopher Mc Kenna(D) and his Harps partner Terry Mc Elvaney representing the county on winning their Ulster U21 Semi-Final in the Harps alley early Sunday morning against Antrim men Mark Rainey & N O’ Cairellain on a score line of 21-6l, 21-1, good luck in the final.

County Senior Singles Finals. The remaining finals that we have representatives in will all be played on the 25th of February in St.Mellans the Nov4, Nov3 and the Junior final remember all photo’s must be into county pro via his email. Also hard luck to John Treanor(T) on losing his junior semi-final against Brendan Finan of Tydavnet 21-10, 9-21, 14-21, almost another all club county final but not to be.

County Senior Doubles. A list of the senior county doubles from Nov4 up to Senior are on the notice board in St.Mellans it has began this week but please all check their fixtures as not to miss any games thank you.

Ulster Open Championships. A large crowd of people from all over the province descended onto St.Mellans at the weekend to witness the conclusion of the Men Open Doubles Championship, after the semi-finals were played it left Paul Brady & Michael Finnegan of Cavan against Ricky Mc Cann & Seamus O’ Tuama of Antrim, the Cavan’s men experience proved too strong as they won 21-9, 21-15, and all young ones watching on witnessed what can be achieved if the time and practise is put in, a pure master class in skill, speed and power, in the Minor final we had county winners in Darren Doherty and Darren Byrne against Armagh pairing of Ciaran Duffy & Conal Mc Cavitt 21-18, 21-13, well done boys and good luck in the All Ireland Semi’s.

Senior Club Championships. The club singles and doubles are going well and more or less on target so keep it up, remember play as per fixture and winners write your name into the next round.

Juvenile Club Leagues. Still on going the leagues are starting to take shape now but it not too late to make that 4th spot boys and girls so keep at it, remember write all results in and mark of games coaches. Some suggested the rule to give 5 serves each to each player time about with both players able to score points either serving or receiving this would make sure all get ball action, we leave it up to each coach.

Cuman Na Munscoil. Well done to all the children of the parish who represented their national schools in handball in St.Mellans last Sunday morning in Cuman na munscoil, yet again this proved to be another enjoyable day for all the young players.  We had club players in all finals but unfortunately no winners. In the U11 Singles Ryan Harnet representing Coracrin lost to Eoghan Mc Ginnity St.Marys 11-8, 11-2, U11 Doubles Conor Mc Quiad & Kareth Keenan Deravoy Ns lost to Jakub Szkup & Konrad Koval St.Marys 11-1, 11-1, in the U13 Singles Aaron Mohan for Edenmore lost to his old nemesis Ryan Mooney St.Marys 11-10, 11-8, and in the U13 Doubles Cormac Mc Kenna & Finbarr Mc Ginn also Edenmore lost to Justas Dinbiskus & Caolan Myles St.Marys 11-7, 11-2, also our solitary girl on the day was Catherine Finn representing the U11 girls.

Juveniles County Doubles. A list of the juvenile doubles that have been entered into the county championship is on the notice board at St.Mellans, get practising. All games will for all age groups be run off in St.Mellans on Sunday coming February the 19th so this will be a very busy days play and should start @ 11am sharp as there are a lot of games to get through. We also ask as many members as possible to come down on the day to help, thank you.

Get Well Soon. The club and all at St.Mellan’s would like to wish a speedy recovery to one of our former club members Austin Mc Kenna, having been our and the county’s secretary for many years he is now the Ulster Handball Secretary. Lets hope to see you back shortly sorting us all out Austin, get well soon from all in the club.
