A Seán Leonard goal and eight points from frees by Mickey McHugh helped Monaghan overcome a slow start to defeat Donegal by 1-18 to 1-11 in their Allianz National Hurling League Division 3A opener on Sunday.
Around the same time, another Monaghan man was lifting some early-season silverware as Scotstown star Darren Hughes captained Ulster to a dramatic 3-11 to 1-15 win over Munster in the Interprovincial Football Championship Final at the Armagh Athletic Grounds. Hughes had a fine game at the heart of the Ulster defence, even managing to score three crucial points, while Clontibret defender Vincent Corey and Latton midfielder Owen Lennon both came on as subs to help see Joe Kernan’s side over the line.
Castleblayney are still unbeaten in the Ulster Club Senior Football League Group C after they drew with Donegal side Killybegs on Saturday.
