The draws for the 2012 Monaghan football championships were made at Tuesday’s county committee meeting.
Latton will begin their defence of the Senior Football Championship against the team who they dethroned last year, Clontibret. These clubs have shared the last seven county titles between them, so there can be no doubt that this is the tie of the round. In the other first-round games, last year’s runners-up Scotstown have been drawn against newly-promoted Currin, while Magheracloone and Castleblayney will go head-to-head. Monaghan Harps, Truagh and Ballybay are all in the preliminary round for the third year in a row. The Harps and Truagh will face off and Ballybay are up against 2011 Intermediate double-winners Carrickmacross.
The two teams relegated from this year’s senior ranks, Inniskeen and Doohamlet, have both been drawn in the Intermediate Football Championship preliminary round, with the Grattans facing newly-promoted Toome and 2010 IFC winners Doohamlet paired with Seán McDermotts. In the first round, Corduff and Rockcorry will repeat their 2011 semi-final, while Junior double-winners Cremartin return to Intermediate with a game against Donaghmoyne and the remaining game sees Aughnamullen take on Tyholland.
After being beaten in two finals this year, Clones will begin their bid to emulate Cremartin by bouncing back in the preliminary round, where they have been drawn against Oram. The other preliminary match brings together Emyvale and Killeevan, while Drumhowan have drawn Fergal O’Hanlons in the first round, where there are also clashes between Aghabog and Éire Óg and Blackhill and Killanny.
