Best Wishes: Best wishes for a very speedy recovery are extended to Fr. Michael McKenna, SJB., who recently underwent major surgery in Hong Kong, where he is ministering. Fr. Michael was one of Emyvale’s most promising footballers during the second half of the ’fifties, and holds the unique honour of being the only Monaghan man to win a Munster Colleges SF Championship medal, which he won while at college in Co. Limerick. As a result of his performances there he was honoured by the southern provincial selectors who picked him for Munster in the Colleges Inter-provincial series, which was then in vogue. Following their win over the Ulster Colleges side, he was approached by an Ulster mentor who, seeing his name, guessed (correctly) that he might have Monaghan connections. When he discovered that Michael was from Emyvale, his comment was – ‘You should be playing for us and not for them (Munster)’.
At the same time Mick was playing for Emyvale minors and played at centre-half-back on the team that reached the 1956 Maguire Cup (MFL) Final, defeating Monaghan Harps, Currin, Clones and Threemilehouse on their way to the last hurdle, but lost out to Aughnamullen, 3-4 to 1-5, in the Final at Ballybay. Both he and team captain, Packie Hughes, were honoured by the Monaghan selectors that same year, and played on the county minor side that defeated Cavan, 1-7 to 0-5, in the Ulster quarter-final at Ballybay, but lost, 0-7 to 0-5, to Armagh in the semi-final at Lurgan. He then graduated to the Emyvale senior side, but studies took him away from Co. Monaghan, to answer a much higher calling, which he has served faithfully for over the past half century.
Australia Bound: best wishes to Barry McGuirk and Colin Donnelly who recently jetted of to Australia.
Table Quiz: table quiz in Wrights bar Glaslough this Friday night the 9th of December in aid of Building of Hope Project which Patricia McGonnell will be participating next year. All welcome for a fun night.
