5Km flat race/Operation TransFAUGHmation run/walk – After all the weeks of planning the big day arrived on Sunday with the running of the inaugural Faughs 5km road race. Despite the weathers best efforts to spoil things the town was alive from early morning with last minute preparations and from 11AM there was a steady flow of people arriving at the registration point in the Glencarn Shopping Centre. The excitement was raised another notch at 1.30PM when Mark Loughman put the assembled masses through a warm-up. The race began at bang on 2.00PM and the 450 or so entrants set off out the Monaghan Road. In no time at all the leaders had turned for home and the winner Darragh Rennicks crossed the finish line in the amazing time of 15’39”, another notable finisher was the first Faugh home, Marty McElroy in a time of 19’11’. When the last person was home there was a very well attended prizegiving ceremony in the Glencarn Hotel. We would like to thank all those who took part on the day and also everyone who helped out in any way. A more detailed report of the race and full results will appear on www.castleblayneyfaughs.com along with many of the photographs taken on the day.
