Monaghan Harps notes (November 22)

By michael Tue 22nd Nov

AGM: The club’s Annual General Meeting takes place in the clubhouse this Sunday at 3pm. The decision to change back to the Sunday-afternoon AGM was made after a proposal at a monthly meeting to encourage and facilitate more members to attend. Before that, the juvenile club’s AGM is on in the clubhouse on Thursday at 7pm. The club’s adult and juvenile committees for 2012 will be elected at these important meetings and anyone who wants to get involved or take an interest in the future of our club is welcome to attend either or both.

Monaghan Harps Lotto: Numbers 13, 15, 26 and 27. Jackpot of €1,750 not won. Residual prizes: €100 Clara Morgan c/o Ladies Club; €40 Marie McKenna c/o Noel Hennessy; €40 Peter McKenna c/o Paddy Donnelly; €40 Stephanie O’Connell c/o Ciarán Cuddy. Jackpot for Sunday, November 27 is €1,900. Lotto draw takes place in the clubhouse every Sunday night. Good luck to Barry Sullivan on his trip to support his second team Manchester United this weekend!

Street League: This year’s Monaghan Harps juvenile street league concluded last weekend. Luke Coyle and Killian McAdam led their team to a draw in an epic final, while Seán Conway and Dáire Martin kept their team on level terms. We would like to express our thanks to all children who turned up to this fun event and also to all the coaches who were there throughout. Thanks also to Adrian Duffy for his help with reports on the street league.

Gloria: We are delighted to welcome well-known Monaghan-born singer Gloria to the clubhouse at Gavan Duffy Park on Saturday, December 3. Tickets are available from club members and from the clubhouse at a cost of €10.

Quiz: We are hosting a table-quiz in the clubhouse on Friday, December 9. All support would be greatly appreciated for this fundraiser.

Rannafast Cup: Hard luck to Kevin Loughran, Jason McHugh, Jamie Cassidy and John Mulligan, who were part of the St. Macartan’s College Rannafast Cup panel that went so close to winning the Rannafast Cup last Friday. Unfortunately, the Sem lost by a single point, but Monaghan football can take heart from their performance.

Coaching: An impressive line-up of coaches and tutors will take part in a Football Coaching Conference at St. Macartan’s College this Saturday, November 26. The conference, which costs €10 or €30 for four from one club, aims to provide quality information and innovative methods of delivery for coaches working with players from six to 16 years of age.

Handball: The good news keeps coming in for Ramunas following last week’s heroics in Kilkenny. The Elite Coaching group at Croke Park has invited him to join their squad for specialist coaching which will be held at different venues throughout Ireland before Christmas. Also on Monday the club received a phone call from Walter O’Connor, Handball President, stating that a donor wished to sponsor Ramunas to travel with the Irish team to play in the USA Junior Nationals which will be held in Tucson, Arizona at the end of December. Everyone at the club is delighted at the news, as this is a tremendous honour for our club and for handball in the county. At the County AGM recently Conor McDonnell was elected as Chairman.  Congratulations are due also to Conor on being chosen as Handballer of the Year for 2011.  Don’t forget that all ages in the Juvenile County Championships will be held at various venues on Sunday, December 4.

Clubhouse: The Gavan Duffy Park clubhouse, which offers fully-lighted lounge and function-room and ample car-parking space, is available to book for parties and functions, by contacting Liadhan Treanor at 086 7837204.

Charity match: The club’s annual charity match has been fixed for Monday, January 2, 2012, so please keep the date in your diary.

Twitter: Our twitter page is a good way of keeping in touch with club news. We are still playing catch-up on other local clubs, so get following @MonaghanHarps!

Good luck: To Cremartin in the Ulster JFC Final this Sunday.

People of the Year: Rehab will be hosting the Monaghan People of the Year Awards on Friday, December 9 in The Hillgrove Hotel. The awards are a unique opportunity to publicly honour people who have made an extra ordinary contribution to their community. Club and Community Groups can nominate their “unsung hero” by cutting out the coupon in the Northern Standard or on Facebook. The awards are hosted by Rehab in association with Monaghan County Council and proudly sponsored by Silver Hill Foods. Tickets and enquiries to Mary Gamble at 086 0432428.

Congratulations: To Therese McNally on her Ulster GAA Writers’ award.
